ignition barrel possibly worn

Featured Replies

I think the ignition barrel could be worn

Other members of family turn key alright, but for me i think it feels worn, and it just doesn't turn that easy for me at times.

Doesn't seem to turn aswell as the VW, don't know if it because i think about too much, or just comparing it

But i feel like a new barrel is needed, have two keys but noticed one key blade  seems a little loose, after getting, another key cut as we all terrible with keys.

Skoda said it takes a month for a new barrel, i may take it to them to ask there opinion on it.

Hi. I recently purchased a 2009 Fabiamand I have had the same problem. Every time I took it into the garage they said they couldn't fault it. However I really struggled with it. Ordered the new barrel from the factory which took a couple of weeks as I wanted to keep the same key, just got it fitted and now it feels far better.

Mine will become a bit difficult on hot days, otherwise it's fine

i had few people struggle with mine, used graphite spray, good as new ever since

Mmmmm......

You shouldn't use grease on a cylinder barrel. Use Graphite powder sold by locksmiths.

When my the ignition barrel on my wife's Fabia started to play up last May I was quoted £238 - £328 by a main dealer and £195 - £265 by a VAG indie for supply and fit. Price variations were due to labour requirements - some wanted 1 hour, others 2 hours. Luckily the graphite powder has worked (so far).

Agree with that ......no way should grease be used in ignition/steering lock.

When I bough my car (a year old and 13,000 miles) the ignition lock was very stiff to turn. Skoda sold me a little spray of stuff like WD40 which fixed the problem. It is a very runny fluid and should flush any wear particles of dirt out of the lock. I would be tempted to use some WD40 sprayed in the lock using the thin red straw that usually comes with a new can. Spray, work the key in the lock and then spray again.
