Alloy's Stuck On...................

Featured Replies

I've just put my Furbie vRS back on to it original 16" wheels:) . What a job I had getting the other alloys off. Had to use a rubber mallet and plenty of brut force to get them off:mad: , they seemed to be corroded on so when i fitted the original wheels I gave them a dab of copper grease on the touching parts, also on the wheel nuts.

might be worth doing this a couple of times a year, i'd hate to get a puncture and be unable to remove the wheel............................Just a Thought

yea a bit of a bummer, trying to get alloys off if u dont use copper grease.

There is another way but requires a bit of faith ...

1) crack wheel nuts

2) jack car up so that wheel is off the road

3) loosen wheel nuts so that they are almost off stud but not quite (still couple of turns left , say ..)

4) LOWER car jack so that weight of car tries to move wheel on the studs and 'cracks' the corrosion 'seal' between alloy and iron hub..

5) RAISE car on jack and remove wheel ..

EAsy :) saves getting a sweat on with a rubber mallet ( which most people dont have !!)

There is another way of doing this. If you suspect it's not on too hard, using the side of a mallet, hit the tyre on the inside edge to knock it off. You may have to do this on both 'far' sides of the wheel. Do not hit the wheel !

Another better way is to put a piece of wood (approx 25mm x 60mm x 700mm) across the back of the wheel so it rests on the tyre. Then batter the hell out of it with a hammer hitting outwards. This will not damage the tyre as the wood will take the impact & spread the load across the tyre.

Apparently, another trick is to pour boiling water over the hub through the wheel, as the hub is supposed to expand differently than the wheel, thus breaking the 'seal'. Don't know if it works though?

um I had the unfortunate "luck" of having this happen to me earlyer in the year came out from work and noticed that my fron off side tyre looked rather flat, so did the useual rigmarole of cracking the nuts off on the floor, jacked the car up removed the nuts and for some reason the wheel stayed put,

after 10 minutes of trying to pull i off or kick it off, with the help of a few other guys it still wouldnt budge!, had to resort to the AA in the end who then appeard with a large mallet and a plank of wood and had it sorted in 30 sec's.

moral of the story - get Skoda or your garage to remove your wheels at service and get them copper greased if your too loazy to do it yourself!!

pour the water over the wheel and it works everytime, just smear the affected parts with grease (oooooerrrr missus) before putting them back on
