Speed cameras 'may fund police'

Featured Replies

That's easy, the indicated speed shown on your speedometer is slower than your true speed, so at an indicated 30mph your speed is probably 28-29 mph. If you drive to the indicated speed you will always be under the speed limit and you won't get a ticket.

Usually true.   Different manufacturers and instrument manufacturers tend to aim at different tolerance of deliberate error ie 5%, 3%, 7%.  Surprised how accurate the Dacia-Renault one is compared the the Fabia VRS for instance so I always calibrate after a new vehicle or change of tyres from Summer to All Season so I know within a couple of percent how inaccurate the speedo is in that vehicle with that tyre setup.

I find it useful to know, both for the average speed and static camera sites and am oft surprised how some users are doing 45 mph or less a 50 mph controlled zone.   Always want to be compliant to the law as driving licence is very important but also time is money but would just like to know what rules we are working to.

I tend to set the cruise control to 52-53 mph in the average speed camera zones on the motorway and invariably I will pass cars doing 45 - 48. Don't pass many trucks, they seem to be travelling at the same speed or faster.

Spot on.

Truckers know the rules and seem to use the 10% margin and if Bedfordshire Police start to set variables actually on the nominal speed plus one then I for one will set my cruise speed to say 48 in a 50 controlled area, 68 for normal non-variable controlled zone if Beds go through with this.

The trick is going to be remembering when one enters Beds!

But speed awareness money goes straight to the force ;)

Hence the push to lower limits to catch more drivers.

No, Speed Awareness money goes to the local authority which funds the partnership.

This whole thing appears to be a poorly judged publicity stunt.

I was told if you're unsure when traveling through average speed cameras to just keep pace with hgv's because hgv's have their speedo's calibrated so they are more likely to be accurate.

I had it once when I was in my Mk1 Golf, I was sitting at 50mph on my speedo but had a lorry literally sat on my bumper flashing his light's at me.

Turning on M1 speed cameras permanently could help bolster a cash-strapped police force's coffers.

Only from those people who are too stupid to see the way around this revenue raising scheme . . . and who probably shouldn't be allowed to drive a motor vehicle anyhow. These people are the target audience of McDonald's advice that coffee cups "may contain hot liquid".
