Help!  I am having problems with what appears to be severe overheating. There are no warning lights or warning alarms, no evidence of the problem when inside the vehicle, e.g. smells or smoke, but when standing outside the car with the bonnet raised, EXTREME heat radiating from engine compartment, all components far too hot to touch, including battery top and even bonnet stay!There is also a strange smell like hot metal or possibly hot fluid of some kind. Oil and coolant levels all o.k., brakes not binding, and tyre pressures all o.k. Symptons first appeared after return trip from east coast to wakefield area(60 miles?), then 2 weeks later after short trip from Castleford to Normanton (5/6miles?), then again after trip of 30 miles. In each instance when stood next to the vehicle, the engine sounds different, maybe "higher pitched".

 

The car was booked in to the local (Wakefield) Skoda dealer who say they can find no fault that could cause this prroblem, and they told me it is the Diesel particulate filter "burning off the soot" and this "generates temperatures of 600deg".. Iam not exagerating when i describe the heat, it must be a hairs breadth from bursting into flames.

 

Any advice or help would be much appreciated. 

And is the cooling fan running at all?

If it doesn't boil then it will probably still be the newness burning off so to speak?

I find mine smells occasionally if I've gave it some stick!

Does sound like dpf is just doing a forced regen have you noticed if the exhaust is extra smelly? Usually get a smell like a burnt hair dryer on a forced regen

My 1.6tdi gets very hot under the bonnet and makes a burning smell after a DPF regen as expected when the regen process heats up the DPF to 600 degress. I take it your temp (the one thats blue for a few miles at start up) light does not turn red. Mine has been doing this and 40k miles on its still not caught fire.

As there is no dashboard indicator to show when the DPF is regenerating, watch out for the idling speed (out of gear) rising from 800 to 1000rpm. In my car it also results in the engine idling badly like it was petrol with a broken spark plug lead or spark plug oiled up. It only lasts for 10 minutes and does not seem to result in signs of general overheating. Running and acceleration are normal.

 

My car is the standard hatchback with a 105hp 1.6 diesel engine. Apart from the standard fuel consumption moan, I have no complaints about the engine set-up. My car has done 38.000 miles so far.

 

I would check the engine fault codes with an ODBII reader or similar. I wonder if the EGR has stuck open or something similar.
