Specific question on Turbo Dentists Drill Noise on Mk1 vRS

Featured Replies

I know this is a topic done to exhaustion but I have a specific question/situation which I can't find by searching.

Driving along yesterday, no pop or bang or other such noise, no smoke, no whooshing sound (I've had that accompanied by an inability to see out the rear view mirror for smoke when the hose from the intercooler came off).

However, turned a corner and all of a sudden a dentists drill arrives. The difference is that it happens from idle, its not under power. Clearly no boost is getting to the engine as its gutless but I had to finish my journey yesterday driving exceptionally gently as I don't want to ruin the turbo if its not already. The sound seems to be emitted from the back of the engine bay, by the looks of it by the turbo (is that the turbo sitting a little under the inlet pipe from the air filter?)

After driving very gently after about half an hour I could tell that the sound was getting worse and no it sounds as though its wobbling/hunting a tiny bit at just idle.

Its the earlier engine, ASZ or whatever - not BLT. Have done the EGR delete and couldn't see anything wrong but on a dark night I've got no real way of verifying that.

My question is, is the fact it whines all the time and not just on power indicative of a leak hose rather than a shot turbo? I appreciate it might not be as simple as that...

Cheers in advance.

If I had a penny for every tragic and plaintive denial post on here about turbos then I'd have at least a fiver.

Take the TIP off and check it yourself ferchrissakes, look at the impeller and give it a wiggle. Five minutes work and you'll know the truth.

Don't beg us to come up with some ludicrous scenario in which it isn't a turbo failure because 99% of the time IT'S A TURBO FAILURE  :notme:

The second sentence epitomises what this and (every other forum) is meant to be about and I'm grateful.

I'm not in denial, I'm not begging, I'd like to think I'm not tragic, I'm just trying to be specific as there are a seemingly million different turbo whine questions and they don't match my scenarios. And people don't tend to put resolutions on threads - which I try to if I get an answer. I have no problem accepting the truth if it is the case - I just want to be able to plan and therefore seek the greater knowledge and experience on places like these as well as just taking it to a mechanic or dealer. Again, point of a forum.

Don't take it out on me just because you appear to have gotten out the wrong side of bed.

Love and kisses
