1st Impressions - Good And,unfortunately,bad

Featured Replies

drove the car down to the midlands last week and, in terms of performance, the 98RON program is absolutely fantastic! the sports cat really makes a difference. i had forgotten how much fun it is to blow away troublesome mercs/bm's etc. hanging on your tail. fantastic car!

fuel economy was great throughout, averaging 35mpg on the journey down. which brings me nicely to the not so good news....

return journey was going swimmingly. thought i would check how many miles the computer reckoned i could do - it said 50. a minute later it said 30. WTF?!!! i thought it was probably just bad at guesstimating the last few litres of fuel. anyway, pull into hilton park services, computer now saying 10 miles!! stop at a pump and chap draws up alongside to tell me that the RS has been leaking fuel on the motorway!!!

so i pull up, call the AA. he can't see an active leak and now i'm almost completely empty so he asks me to put a few pounds of fuel in the tank. when i unscrewed the fuel filler cap, there was an amazing amount of back pressure and a considerable amount of fuel came out. it did this the first time i filled up after picking the car up last week too. again, no active leak was seen but he thought that the leak was actually coming from the overflow near the entrance of the fuel filler caused by some back pressure - due to what he wasn't sure. he mentioned fuel tank breather(?) but said i couldn't drive the car :(

the next two hours were unbelievable and i won't go into it here in detail - suffice to say that AA customer services will be getting a call later.

so, now i'm at home, the car is on the back of a recovery truck going to horner's and i am waiting with baited breath to find out

a) what's wrong with it and

B) when i can get it back

:(

Shoulda got a 1.6... :D

But seriously, gutted to hear the problem with it... :(

Rob.

Shoulda got a.... ;)

Teething troubles, soon be sorted! :D

yeah, i'm pretty upbeat! just missing having it outside on the drive. had forgotten what's it's like to want to go for a drive just for the hell of it. went out to get the paper on sunday and came back one hour later! :D

also feel a lot better knowing that it's going to horners and will be in capable hands. will speak with gary tomorrow and hopefully sort out a courtesy car.

badoom - tish!

Sorry to hear about the trubble... :( - I strongly suspect, looking back, if my car had started pi55ing out diesel after a week of ownership (before I'd discovered the real Skoda) I'd have been taking the car to my dealer and insisted on getting my money back - luckily it didn't, and hasn't, and I ran into this fine place... :D

[ excuse the emotion (group-hug)- must be yesterday's activities coming out again. HATRICK! ]

im sure they will sort it soon Huck...

;)

very good guess but not right. had the very same problem with my last RS. bloody annoying so made them double check i was registered before i picked this one up.

what happened was we had a full boot, which as you know in an octavia is an awful lot. the aa bloke said i could get a car for 2 days and so proceeded to ring the aa hire people, only to be told that they only had puntos and corsas. with all that luggage, my wife and 3 month old baby ( and baby related paraphenalia ), this was obviously no dice. then the hire person said, and i heard this as it was on the aa guy's handsfree, that they had a rover 75 and i could have that if i paid the extra. cool, i thought.

so i left wife, baby , luggage and RS and went with aa guy to wolverhamptom to pick up the hire car.

eventually get to hire place, with the recovery truck guy constantly calling to ask when we'll be back as he had arrived at the car. go to the desk only to be told that there is and never was a rover 75 available for hire - total mess up of communication between aa guy, call centre and hire car place. aa guy starts having argument with hire car guy and it all gets a little stupid. told him to just take me back *NOW* to my car and i'll get a lift with the recovery truck.

finally get to family and car, get car on truck and get taken to home in crap traffic.

That experience has got to be worth a free service - and preferably a variable one which means you save a fair bit of dosh. You have opted for variable, haven't you, Huck?

actually denis, i didn't specify when i picked the car up. i think i'll be going regular as before.

Huck, just as well it wasn't diesel you were dumping on the highways. That would have made life very interesting for other drivers. :drive:

Huck,

If it's any consolation, I've seen similar symptons on a Sierra Cosworth, and it was very cheap to repair :) Just a case of unblockking the breather.....

Cheers,

Paul.

thanks paul, i hope it is a simple problem. i've been on to the garage today and they're already looking at it so fingers crossed.

It certainly sounds like a blocked breather. As the fuel returned to the tank warms up it will expand and create the back pressure you experienced, if not released via the breather.

  • Author

excellent, we have a consensus of sorts! hope it's confirmed soon, miss the car like crazy.

Any news on the car Huck

  • Author

not yet greg.

will hopefully find out more tomorrow.

  • Author

no good news as yet :(

apparently they can't find an obvious cause for the back pressure that's being created and have been on it for a while.

will call them tomorrow and hopefully hear some good news........
