vRS gone into limp mode

Featured Replies

So tonight on the motorway at 70mph the car (2011 vRS) lost power and went into limp mode yellow exhaust symbol flashed and then the EPC light stayed on

Until I got off the motorway and turned the engine off and then back on it was clear, I then drove a further 10 miles and all was clear. The car has had the relevant dsg recall and plugs changed at 22500 the car has currently done 35000 any ideas??

Probably time to change the Spark Plugs again, or at least check them and the gap.

Sealey coil pack puller ordered £12 check them soon as it arrives ps it's still a great car

While you're waiting for the coil pack puller arriving have a quick check at all pipework (hard and soft) that you can get to and check to see if the pipes are all intact and in place, my son had an issue earlier this week with the 1.4tsi (Seat Ibiza Bocanegra but same engine etc) where it turned out a small seal on one of the smaller pipes wasn't in place.

His car didn't get as far as limp mode as it was spotted when car was idling, but the exhaust light and EPC came on so it's worth perhaps checking all the pipework if you can. I have a feeling that George will be closer to the mark with the spark plugs but it will do no harm to check just in case, plus you'll need to remove pipework in order to get to the left hand plug in any case.

I still can't get my head round the notion that Skoda think 40,000 miles is the ideal service interval for spark plugs on these engines, particularly when many owners have had problems with misfires and much worse due to spark plugs failing a long while before 40,000 miles.

Good luck and hope you get a good resolution soon.

Thankyou I'll check all pipe work tomorrow at first light, Just got back in and the car went into limp mode 3 times mainly on hills under load, as if it can't get any worse as also I'm half way through the oil consumption test aswell pps it's still a great car.

If it were me I'd be reporting this latest problem to Skoda UK and the participating dealer conducting the oil consumption test, it's hardly a fair test when the car is running as rough as a bag of spanners. Are you getting any oil pressure warning lights coming on as it enters limp mode or once in limp mode?

It might, given that the car is currently in the midst of an oil consumption test, be wise that you don't do anything blatantly obvious yourself to the engine as I wouldn't want you to present an already reluctant manufacturer with a gift of a get out clause ie infer that you're in some way to blame for problems as you tinkered with the engine, I guess I'm suggesting just be careful when in and around the pipework and/ or plugs that you don't leave trace you were tinkering, if possible.

Actually just noticed your car is a 2011 cave engined vrs, are you in a period of extended warranty or are you having to pay for costs associated with oil consumption test?

I would also say plugs are probably past their best ..... hope you get it sorted, let us know :)

I have the 2 year skoda approved warranty no costs incurred and your right sharkrider I will contact them asap and leave it in there capable hands and will update.

Blimey... These Vrs' seem to live on plugs and oil!

They need better Spark Plugs than the original that VW fitted, and even the updated ones that they changed the gap on

but not the Service Schedule guidelines.

Only the faulty engines they built and sold and even replaced with like for like are oil users.

Scanned on carista to check

faults it read this,

That is the plug that gets cooked usually, the one to remove first.

Have you done this? Piece of cake to do, but replace all 4 at the same time...if you need a hand let me know and i'll come over/meet somewhere?

Agree with goneoffski, my number 3 went first :(

Cheers Nath I will one day need to know how to do the plugs (Denso ones) Cars just gone into dealers this morning will await phone call to say what's happening with the misfires and the oil consumption.

Okay Mr J, just let me know when and I'll pop over/meet up :)

Just a quick update this is going to be like pulling teeth

and a lot of phone calls to skoda uk don't want to say too much as big brother is watching you.

Any updates MR J?

Do you think it's worth taking mine in for a consumption check before the warranty runs out guessing it's free of charge before I keep it then find it wants a new engine a year later

So spark plugs have been changed & I will be doing a second oil consumption test as the first one was one was inconclusive due to having misfires.

Sense prevails, which doesn't happen often with Skoda UK and even less with some franchised dealers. Hopefully they've covered cost of plugs for you, and hope you end up with the car you believed you had bought in the first place. Once the engine is sorted out it really is a cracking little car.

You're right the plugs have only been in for 13,000 miles it will be interesting to see what they look like when I go back, hopefully it will be sorted can't stand the loan car.

Spark plugs replaced today the one on cylinder 3 was shot to say the least, the work was done on the plugs under parts guarantee as they were less than two years old. The consumption test after 373 miles showed usage of 160g which is 0.27 over a 1000kms they equated it to, tolerance is 0.84g. These figures they come out with are just bingo numbers they call out I'm sure. As there were misfires on 100 of the 373 miles I am now doing another consumption test .

Edited by Mr j

What tolerances?

If the car / engine was acceptable using 0.5 litres in 1000 km, then 1 litre in 2000 km (1,242 miles)

would be acceptable.

1 Litre is 857 grams.

A test of 300 km, or 600 km and multiplying the oil used is to inaccurate and even a heavy oil user can have a result from a test of 0.31 litres per 1000km.

If they want a car tested they should put in the correct quantity of oil and have someone drive for 1,242 miles or so as they use the car.

3 or 4 tanks of fuel, real oil consumption testing.

Can you put up the Test Results.?

Oil weight before test, after test and the difference the technician weighed it as.

Equations are not required, it is a real car covering real miles,

nothing is difficult, all that VW does is show a test that is not fit for purpose.

I should have took a photo or a copy. At the beginning the oil put in weighed 3100g and after 373 mile it weighed 2940g difference of 160g.

The weight of the oil is supposed to be what is drained out after new oil and filter goes in before being brought up to temperature,

then drained.

The weight after the test is the oil up to temperature and drained.

At the start of a test, you do not get 3100 grams out,  and then put back in if the Oil put in was 3.6 litres.

3100 grams might be what he/she weighed and put in the Engine,

It is not what you get out unless you over filled, because no way do you get drained 100%.

Other members will have their accurate test results,

i can show mistaken ones.
