Engine sounds louder after 10k service

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had my Octavia serviced last week (10k/12 month service) and ever since the engine seems a little louder....

Do they use a different grade oil after 10k miles? I know some use a different oil for the running in period...

Anyone else ever experienced this?

Steve. :)

I had the opposite. After my first service (one year but only 4800 miles) this October, it felt like a different car (in the "better" sense!)

Smoother, quieter, and more oomph. I wondered if they had tinkered with the electronics.

What oil is on the Invoice, the factory oil is Long Life for Variable Servicing, and the OIl now should be the same grade but

you may now find you get better Economy.

If you are on the Fixed Annual Servicing through choice or a Service Plan ask or check what oil has been used.

Also ask,

was the Car on the Diagnostics and did you 'Update the Software' or carry out any 'Service Campaign Actions' and fail to inform me.

Hi,

It had 4.6 litres of 5w 30 long life oil put in - it's on a free 3 year service plan (10k, 20k & 30k etc.).

The paperwork states they did checks for software and product updates, as well as any other outstanding campaigns.

What electronics/software updates could change the sound/volume of the engine though?

Steve.

A Software Update can change the Sound and performance of an engine,

It is changing the Engine Management, and usually for the better.

But some experience worse performance and economy, or they think they do,

which is when they realise something has been done to their car.

eg,

Skoda Fabia MK2 vRS that were having various engine issues, might see a car running perfectly getting a service,

and a Skoda / VW Software update, and then feeling sh!te,

at least for a while, sometimes its just the DSG needs to relearn;  sometimes, they had a good car in and a sh!te car handed back.

So just ask the Dealership Service Desk to ask the Workshop Master Tech,

Did my car get a Straightforward Service, and was anything else done and Why.

Was the Software Update if done, done for some particular reason?

(ie Are there some Preventative Engine Management changes to the ECU /Map being done by Skoda / VW.)

Another possibility is that they have reset some of adaptive values for fuel pump, injectors, lambda sensor etc during the service.

Perhaps due to a calibration or software update for the ECU.

However, they should tell you if they have performed an update to any of the electronic modules as they will only do this if there is a service bulletin for it.

I would mention it to the dealer, give it a weeks or so to see if it improves (adaptive values should learn fairly quickly) & if not take it back in.
