SmartLink - MY16 SE Spaceback - Hardware or firmeware ?

Just realised missed a trick with not adding Smartlink on the SB.

To enable this, is it a hardware update or can it be done via software ?

Thanks -

As SmartLink is standard on everything except the S, I assume you mean SmartGate?

It's a little box not much bigger than a matchbox which, if I remember right, plugs into a socket under the driver's seat.

No tools needed and no software needed in the vehicle. It's accessed by your phone/tablet by downloading Škoda's free app.

Can the box be purchased after the fact?

If you have a postFL car, it is a software thing. However, it seems that you must buy a license for SmartLink (which includes licenses from Apple, Android etc) and VW AG can only install this license at the factory. I believe that soon it will be given as a dealer option also. Rather expensive (~EUR200), but an option.
