Not great looking alloys but might they do the job?

Featured Replies

I've been thinking about sticking some winters on my '10 plate Mk2 vRS. I do about 80 miles a day commuting cover all types of road. I was thinking about steelies but have found some alloys.

I know they might not be the best looking alloys but what do you guys think...will they fit? and what are they worth?

They are 16" 16x7J ET35 and were on a Mk1 Octavia and the Michelin Alpin's have about 5mm on them all. They aren't the cleanest set as the guy said he used 'Wonder Wheels' on them a year ago and some of the paint has started to bubble...I'd have thought easy enough to powder coat is necessary after being cleaned up.

I'd appreciate your thoughts guys :)

Thanks.

Ed

Only if the other bolt fitment is 5x112 as mk1 octys are 5x100 and also if they clear the front brakes, 16s are usually the smallest you can get away with for the 312mm setup but youd be best to trial fit one to make sure they wont foul the calipers.

Yeah, like 88sr said mk1 Octavia is 5x100 and mk2 is 5x112. I wouldn't buy without trying them on.

It also depends on how much they are.

There are lots and lots of second hand alloys in better condition on eBay at very good prices...

Personally I wouldn't demean my car running those ;)

The guy selling them has been quite fair and said I can happily try them on.

I'm not wanting to spend mega bucks on them. He's asking £100 for them and not a penny less. Anyone know of any better looking winters with good tyres around? To be honest I'm not fussy about how it looks...I can't see them when I'm driving and I'd rather get places in any ice/snow than have it sitting in the drive being unable to get anywhere. The advantage of these ones is that the guy is not that far from where I live so has its advantages of not paying postage.

Good value at £100 - with the mileage you do they'll probably just be good for one winter and then you can get a couple of quid back from scrapping them.  Provided they're 5x112 with 57.1mm centre bore they'll be fine.  The width and offset will fill the arches out nicley - we had a set of Audi A6 wheels that size that we used for winters on a 2010 vRS.  Just watch out for bolt type on aftermarket wheels - OEM steels and alloys use a radiused bolt, some aftermarket wheels need tapered bolts.

Check the load index of the tyres is high enough for the vRS and as others have said they are also 5x112 and they should be fine.

They are not in the best condition or have a great deal of snow tread left (the sipes disappear @ 4mm) but they would see you through this winter OK and at £100 they rarely come this cheap.
