DSG Stalling - 5 times in 3 days

Featured Replies

I've got a new Fabia (100 miles on the clock, 1.4 tdi) as a courtesy car while my Octavia is in for repairs. It has a DSG auto gearbox but it's stalling...is this normal? I've never owned an automatic, although have driven a couple before, and none have stalled so a bit confused.

Hopefully I've only got it for another week but until then just wondered if I'm doing something wrong? It's always been when either manoeuvring into or out of a parking space and once when pulling away from traffic lights.

It also has a very annoying whine coming from somewhere. It sounds like a sort of electrical whine coming from the engine but very audible in the cabin and every passenger has commented on it.

Could be the stop/start technology?

Sounds like the stop start. Try switching it off, on my car the button is to the right of the steering wheel, by the light switch.

When the stop start has kicked in you'll see a capital A in a circle on the dash screen

No not the start/stop...I turned that off as don't like it on mine.

Forgot to say it actually comes up with a message saying "manual start" or something similar to that.

That's start stop, put your seatbelt on and don't exit the car  for more than 30 seconds or it will stop the engine entirely.

If it's the stop/start why isn't it starting itself? I've got stop/start in my Octavia and it behaves nothing like this.

You mention that it happens when you are parking.

It does say somewhere in the manual that the car can stall if the angle of steering is extreme when moving slowly - ie: parking.

Mine has stalled a couple of times in these conditions, and also asks for a 'manual start'

I think it can do that on full lock to protect the steering motor from overload. That is probably also the "whine" you can hear...the steering motor, (electric). If you ease off full lock by just a few degrees the "problem" should go away.

No the whine is there all the time from the moment you start the car until the moment you turn it off.

Car goes back Wednesday so shouldn't have to worry about it beyond then!

Lets hope the Skoda DEalership can maybe find a garage with a Trained Technician that can sort out the faults before some unsuspecting

person buys their 'Demonstrator / Management / Courtesy Car / Lemon.

?

Are you trusting these people that supplied you with this car to fix your Pride and Joy?

Remember once you return to and post the Registration Number so that others can avoid buying it as a used car.

I've got a 1.2TSi 110 DSG. The petrol engine never stalls.

With the DSG, you have no control of the clutch. If the engine stalls, there is something wrong with the car.

You can not do anything about it, there is something wrong with the car.

It is a serious problem that will lead to an accident that the driver can not avoid.

It shouldn't be stalling. The clutch should be disengaging to prevent a stall.

Say for instance you're on a steep slope. If you try and move the car with too little (or no) thottle input your risk stalling the engine (just like a manual car) but the clutch should disengage to prevent the stall.

It's probably got a fault if it's doing it repeatedly.

It could be a fault with the engine and not the gearbox too.

Definitely faulty and after testing this morning it can be replicated very easily whenever I want so should be able to show the dealer when handing it back later.

It only happens when I haven't compressed the accelerator enough - with start/stop disabled. Leaving my parking space at home which is on a slight incline it stalls unless the peddle is pressed down firmly but the problem with this is it lerches forward rather than moves away smoothly. I tried it 4 or 5 times and every time I pressed the accelerator gently it stalled. Accelerating harder out of the space is fine and doesn't stall. I'm not accelerating any softer than I would my manual Octavia. I then tested it at the traffic lights it's stalled at previously, which are again on a slight incline and was easily able to stall it.

Could be something to do with the hill hold being too strong. I'll leave it all with the dealer though and hope by the time my Octavia has yet another problem, the courtesy car is fixed.

Hello

I'm having problems with my 1.4TDI 2015 diesel 104bpi.  Have had it only a month and the engine stalls regularly and often at speeds of around 35-40 mph (once also at low revs - different feel - and once out of the blue at about 50mph on the level . sometimes on the flat but also pulling out of uphill curves and going downhill on bends .  There's no warning, no juddering, just suddenly realising that there's no power under the accelerator and the engine has gone.  It's was back with the dealer within a week and they said there was a fault in the 'control module' which they fixed, however, it has continued and can happen a couple of times a day or nothing for 2 or 300 miles or more. The dealer says there is no problem but I'm sure there is...

Would love some advice, views, thoughts please

Hi again,

That's my post above.  Just an addition.  I switch off the stop-start at the beginning of each journey since I really don't like it.  That has made no difference to the problem.

Thanks

When I first got my fabia tdi dsg, it stalled about 3 times in the first month, it never happened again so i put it down to the engine/gearbox just needing running in.

This.

There really isn't any 'youre doing it wrong' with this one. If the car stalls by design at extreme steering angles then its still a fault, but a design fault.

Too much drain on the battery and Stop / Start activating type thing and 'Manual Start' required.

So Skoda UK Maindealers are who you tell, and they should tell Skoda UK, and they should tell Skoda CZ, and nobody should say 'They all do that'.

because then they are accepting Fundamental Design & Manufacturing faults are rife and accepted.

Do not put off raising a case with SKODA UK CUSTOMER SERVICES and have them arrange 'Qualified Engineeers or Technicians' to arrange you have a safe vehicle.

As it's the diesel variants that are stalling, I'd be interested to know if the cars are doing a regen when they stalled. This could be a software glitch causing this issue. Get your dealers to run some checks to see if this is the case. Should be easy to sort out.

Yes It does definitely sound like a software glitch.

When driving on a hill if the load is too high and revs too low the car should either increase engine power to compensate or introduce some clutch slip. If neither of those work or the clutch over-heats (quite quick in the 7 speed) then the clutch will be disengaged and you will loose drive but the engine should never stall.

I experienced this once in my Octavia. It was a 6 speed box I know but the principal is the same. Reversing up a steep drive and I was barely pressing the throttle as it was short and was close to hitting the wall. The engine was under load and the car stopped moving. Before I could press the throttle more the car suddenly rolled forward and I lost drive until I braked and stopped then could continue to reverse.

I also a have this stalling problem with my Skoda Fabia 1.4 tdi 2015, it has even stalled on a busy roundabout with traffic on both sides (very scary). I've been in touch with Skoda, who are trying to arrange an early appointment at their place in Newport for a for Diagnostic test. But since I've contacted them it's come up with another fault, the airbag warning light on all the time.

Not knowing a thing about these modern cars I was wondering if both faults were related. The car has not yet done 9,000 miles.
