cause of steering vibrating at high speed when braking

Hi everyone. Don't know whether I should start a new thread for this. I've asked about how to tell if my clutch is going at the beginning of this thread. I've noticed a burning smell when I switch off the engine that smells suspiciously like clutch. It happened today when I parked up at work. It happened a few days ago aswell.

The clutch pedal is softer than usual. Are there any simple tests I can do apart from check biting point and if I get high revs without all the power transferring to the wheels as has been mentioned. I just don't want to break down on the way to work as I can be working in different places every day. Any help or advice on what precautions I can take of any would be appreciated. Thanks

So its selecting gears ok,no crunching/notchyness changing/selecting gears?

To check for slip when your next driving along in say 3rd or 4th gear let the revs drop down to say 1300-1500rpm then stick your foot to the floor on the accelerator, if the clutch is slipping as the max torque of the engine kicks in the engine revs will shoot up without your speed increasing as it should do,will be like your wheel spinning on ice :)

If this doesn't happen and the car just accelerates normally your clutch is fine.

Ref it smelling, are you sure your not 'riding' the clutch by mistake on your way home?

Hi. Thanks for your quick reply. Selecting gears fine no crunching, grinding or notchy. Thanks I will try that. What do you mean by riding the clutch? Thanks.

Not removing your foot fully off the clutch When moving away,or letting your foot slightly press on the clutch as your driving

Right. Thanks for the clarification. Yes I have a very bad habit of doing that.

Stop it then before you knacker your clutch! (If you haven't already)

Didn't notice any burning today, as I didn't ride the clutch at all. I tried what has been suggested and my clutch us fine for now. Hopefully I can keep it that way as I only had it changed approximately 35k ago. How long do clutches last? Or does it depend on the driver?

I think my driving is bad as every car I've had has had a clutch replacement!

That's an expensive and very bad habit you have there. Stop it.

Depends on the driver my old fabia was on original clutch still at 190k some of out customers have been known to burn them out in less than 5 k.. (and one within 330 miles! )

Yes it is a very bad and expensive habit. Getting out of it. Hopefully I won't need to replace my clutch yet all being well. Thanks for your advice.

Wow that is a LONG time to have an original clutch 190k miles. Lots of motorway miles perhaps?

Do you ride the brake pedal when you're off the accelerator because that would cause disc warping through overheating.

No I definitely don't ride the brake pedal when off the accelerator. Thanks. Just had shoes, pads and discs replaced last month! Hopefully I won't have to do anymore work to it until the MOT on April.
