Skoda Fabia. 8v petrol 1.4. 2002, Poor acceleration ..

Featured Replies

Hi everyone..Need some help before I start spending cash..the car starts first time ok,,hit the throttle an it revs it head off..drive away through the gears get to about 3000 revs an doesn't want to go on, back off the throttle an slowly increase it some times helps,,no misfiring ,,no cut out... Have check all hoses on manifold for splits,, leaks etc all ok..new spark plugs,,air filter good...as it never cuts out or stops have ruled out fuel...I am thinking ignition coil breaking down under load?? The coil fitted is the type which is a long block covering all spark plugs.. Also the fuel mpg is about 38, low?...have pluged in dionostic tester but it doesn't work, checked all fuses all good..any help or info please..thanks..

A clogged catalyst might not allow it to rev over a certain point. If not, I'd say it's running lean on fuel with that mpg if it's around the city and not on motorway. An air leak on the intake wouldn't act like this, the engine would die at idle.

Coil would be my guess, would increase consumption (these engines have terrible mpg anyway) and explain the lack of acceleration

38mpg would be more than reasonabe for this engine. I'm getting that on motorway.

Hi. Thanks for your views guys..update..just been for 40 mile drive, wanted to get engine hot so for 20 miles stayed in 4 gear ( duel carriageway drive) an slowly increased revs to 3500/4000 an cruised at that,, return drive got in 5 th gear an stayed at about 60 mph,, over all very slightly better drive but problem still there..mpg now at 42.5 I'd like to think the hard drive in 4 th gear blown the crap out the engine? My local garage tells me because of the age of the car July 2002 ordinary plugin tester might work in it..so might be old fashioned detective work to sort it out.. Thanks for your help..

Could be the fuel filter, either clogged or the inbuilt regulator might be faulty. Something to check at least.

42 is about what I get on dual carriageway, was getting 35 before fixing thermostat and evap (emission control) sensor, so your MPG seems about right.

Any VAG code reader of the era should work fine, you can also pick one up cheap (~£10) on eBay - search for "U281".

Hi..Thanks everyone for all your help, the Vag 281 tester just looked on EBay an found them at £10 it's well worth a go..my Pro Scan v580 obd/eobn scan tester won't work with this car, so have emailed the seller to see if this vag281 will..many thanks..

The U281 does work. I have one.

Be careful with driving at high rpm. The sensors will like to take a walk, as my oil pressure and G62 did. But I'm mostly driving it over 3500rpm.

Yes, I use a U281 too, works fine.

Have ordered U281 scanner, should be here next Monday, will keep you posted with results ..

Just bear in mind that these cheap code readers are very basic and have nowhere near the capability of VCDS.

Does it revv to redline in 1,2,3rd gear?

38-40mpg seems very reasonable for that engine.   It all seems normal to me, was it livelier before?

Update.. Today put petrol an 1/2 bottle of redex in car, went for 40 mile drive an it's showing 44.4 mpg,,the poor performance has been like that since I bought it, body work on car is excellent an it's low miles so aim gambling I can get it right.. It will go to max revs only if I increase revs very slowly, accelerate fast an it does nothing have to back off throttle an increase slowly..

And I'm sorry again for the offtopic, but this one is for the 1.4 mpi owners around :)e1ff3a56f6b1760e6f686d683e0eff18.jpg

Fuel filter I would guess at. Cheap enough to change to rule it out too.

UPDATE...U281 arrived today...plugged in an its telling me CODE  16555    FUEL TRIM-SYSTEM LEAN ( BANK 1 )  need somebody to explain how to fix this thanks..

16555/P0171/000369 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1: System Too Lean

Possible Causes

  • Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) defective
  • Intake System Leak(s)

Possible Solutions

  • Check Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
  • Check Fuel Pressure Regulation
  • Check Fuel Pump
  • Check Injectors
  • Check Intake System for Leaks
  • Check Exhaust System for Leaks
  • Check Secondary Air System for Leaks
  • Check Vacuum Pipes for Leaks

Personally, I'd replace fuel filter and check that it's pumping petrol strongly, sounds like a fuel starvation problem to me. Also, check for leaks around injectors, and if you still haven't found anything then check airbox etc is all seated properly, but that's less likely I reckon.

Thanks Wiredsoftware..will start with fuel filter an work back ie fuel pump etc...

UPDATE...Changed fuel filter an no different....so went online again just to check on lean fuel problems, an it appears the biggest cause is servo brake hose leaks..took mine off an found split in it..renewed it an problem solved, check codes an all clear, drives all good.. ..big thanks to all who replied to my post an happy christmas to all, many thanks guys..

Glad you got it sorted, and thanks for letting us know the solution.

Well you learn something new every day :) Thanks for letting us know how you resolved it, will have to remember that one for the future. Did it make any difference to braking efficiency? Presumably the servo assistance would have been lower as it wouldn't generate a strong vacuum?

UPDATE.  The brake pedal does feel firmer, but braking was always ok, cant believe I missed the servo pipe, wont forget that one,  thanks guys..
