Paint on exterior plastic trim

Featured Replies

The old dear has managed to get paint on the bumper of her Mini - fortunately none on the paintwork, only the black plastic exterior trim (see photo - not actual car although it is the same model - for illustration purposes only!) - would it be ok to use turps to try to get this off?

Hi Brian,

Very unfortunate that, that has happened.

I'd try something less chemically as a first.. personally I'd try either..

A pencil rubber - gets polish of exterior trim, could possibly work.

1:1 dilution of IPA - Neat if that doesn't work.

If push comes to shove I'd try white spirit/paint thinners. I'd advise washing thoroughly after doing this and adding some trim protection like Krystal Kleen Details Trim-X / 303 protectant.

Cheers Karl - just one question  - what is IPA (other than Indian Pale Ale :D !)?

Edited by Brian69

IPA = Iso Propyl Alcohol

First question usually is.

What kind of Paint.?  (& How much paint?)

ie,

Household Water Based.

Something like Hammerite.  Or something else?

Has she spilt wet fresh paint and how long ago.

(what colour)

George - household paint (someone left some carelessly discarded in a car park) - I'll check the colour tomorrow when it's light. It happened a couple of weeks ago.

ChrisRS can guide you through it with more care than me.

I was only asking colour to know how obvious.

Personally for household paint i start with White Spirits, at the least obvious spot and a very small area, very carefully.

But i have a whole choice of chemicals and alcohols that i can either get to work, or make a mess with.

Unless you have a detailer near you know, go ask at a body shop.

It's a light colour (white / light pink from memory), so noticeable.

Thanks George

You've already said what I would start with

Test on a very very small inconspicuous area if you can

Some White Spirit on a cloth should be the first port of call, if its household paint

Then wipe with an All Purpose cleaner before applying a trim dressing

If this fails, then its probably Automotive paint, so a different method will be required...and more risky

This is where a second opinion may be required, but some IPA or some cellulose thinners in another inconspicuous area may well be successful

Take your time

If this isn't working...go to a body shop and ask for advice. They will have experience of this already I'm sure

But will possibly charge you

Good luck

I would have a go with what I recommended
