Help needed please! Leaking coolant causing despair!

Featured Replies

Have been experiencing coolant loss for the past three months. We've had 5 pressure tests, hot and cold and overnight. Also had a

sniff test, block test and piston pressures tested and we're still losing coolant somewhere. We've replaced the water pump and cambelt, the thermostat and the expansion tank and cap............and still it goes on. No sign of water in the oil, no sign of oil in the water......three different garages have had a look and the local Skoda garage are at a loss..............any ideas?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

could be leaking from the pump? Got mine changed when it went in for a cam belt change. I was unlucky though I had a faulty batch! :/

New water pump for me as leak was from there

What engine is it? As some early 2.0tdi did suffer from porous head issues.

You could try something called k seal as it worked a treat on my mates fabia that suffered from coolant loss issues

Hi. Thanks for the suggestions. The garage changed the water pump with the cambelt (about 8 weeks ago) but I do wonder if that's where the problem lies. They're adamant it shouldn't be but since they changed it things have got worse...........how do we get them to check their work?! in the last week the fan has come on twice and the temperature gauge is above usual position. Also we have recently had heating issues, although that could be because we don't understand the hating system!!!!!!!!!!!.When the garage last had it they again found again that it had an airlock but still couldn't find the fault. BTW it's a 1.9tdi (58 plate). My partner just wants to get rid of the car but I love it and don't believe it's terminal...My Octavia Mk1 gave me long trouble free times and I was sad to see it go but we replaced it with this Mk 2 which drives beautifully.........however I don't feel confident to take it on a motorway anymore because I don't fancy having to pull over to top up the coolant........

Ooops - typographic error - that should have read 'heating system' not hating.............!

I also have a mystery in the coolant, last week the expasion tank was nigh empty so topped it up and light went out. Done 300 mile journey Sunday  with no problems. Today started it up and light is on, again the tank level is right down. Off to Skoda for them to take a look tomorrow.

Whent to our Skoda dealer today and they think its the pump which is causing the loss of coolant, also said might as well do the cam belt although that is not due till September 16.Done 78867 miles so far.

They'll want to do the cam belt because the pump usually leaks over it and can result in weakening of the belt.

any signs of damp carpets inside, could be the heater matrix leaking ???

No signs of water on floor or inside bonnet/ Its going in to Skoda Eastbourne Thursday/ Will let you know what they found.

I mentioned about ours going in for the coolant leak yesterday, well it went in to Skoda and they found the water pump was leaking and caused the cam belt also to be replaced. They done all and it came to £459. They mentioned that the cam belt would have been done next September so its just been brought forward

Hello,  I had a bad coolant leak in my 2010 2.0 Diesel Octavia. It would empty the water reservoir in 20 odd miles.   The problem turned out to be a damaged thermostat housing.  A large piece of the housing had scabbed off internally.  Externally it looked fine. . Apparently VW thermostat housings are prone to this.  There's also an O Ring in the housing that can fail.  Are there no  signs of water leakage on the engine block?

Good luck finding the problem
