ok, looks like I need a new starter motor, skoda reckon about 160-170 quid all fitted. While on the phone the guy mentioned that for 300 quid I could have a years warranty which would replace that and any other things that need doing.

Now the question is will my 51 reg 50k mile octavia 4x4 1.8T fail on any parts in the next year that could use up the rest of my warranty balance of 140 quid?

Answers and experiences on a postcard!

I'd take a chance. My car has a near faultless 89k on the clock (also 1.8T)

You're basically asking "is 140 quid for a year's warranty a good price?".

It sounds pretty good to me, but I couldn't name precise things that I know would fail between 50k and (say) 62k miles.

If you haven't hard front arb bushes done then it sounds like you might be able to get that out of them (squeaking/graunching or slight crashiness over speedbumps or around sharp turns), but it's a cheap job anyway.

Other than that you might have diverter valve or MAF problems - where power is not as good as it should be, or you hear a fluttering sound from the turbo between gear changes (signs that the MAF might be dirty and under-reading airflow, and the latter is the valve leaking pressure between changes - it should divert the pressure and maintain turbo speed to keep turbo power up).

DV valve only costs about 20 quid and is an easy replacement, MAF costs about 100 quid on exchange (they keep your old one).

Hope that helps a bit.

Definiatly... rents took out year extended on their '02 4x4 two weeks after taking this out the turbo and throttle body packed up! well worth the

Sounds like it worth it to me especialy being offered it whilst you have a problem, thats 50% ish off and equates to 2 or 3 hours labour only without any parts that may be included in the future.

Suposing your starter motor issue turns out to be a damaged ring gear on the flywheel as well as starter? sounds like the diagnosis was done over the phone? Not sure on the Octavia but on other cars I have had this type of problem caused/ accelarated by a badly damaged/worn flywheel ring gear.

On my Felicia for instance the symtoms of a sticking starter motor was eventially cured by changing a high resistance ignition switch - after changing the starter motor to no avail.

A new aircon compressor will set you back around £880-£1000 to replace and the Haldex ECU which has been problematic for a number of 4X4 owners is around £650 excluding fitting. Does the warranty have restrictions on parts covered and does it cover breakdown of any part caused by fair wear and tear? It might be worth doing a comparison with Warranty Direct's cover to see which offers the better deal. I bought a warranty for peace of mind.

PS: I'm surprised that you are being offered cover for a pre-existing fault. That goes against the fundamental basis of insurance.

i voted no not beacuse it bulletproof just u can buy external one's ie a non skoda warranty and u can get it cheaper....... plus if u pay an extra like 30 quid on most external warranties u can have all work carried out at a skoda dealer......

I just checked an online quote for warranty direct and it came out at 330 quid for a franchised dealer. Now I dont know the exact comparison in terms of cover. but the 300 quid skoda deal looks good.

Now I dont know the exact comparison in terms of cover.

Ask what is covered from both. Then sit down and compare which is really worth going for. I may well get a warranty again in February.

You need to look in detail at the cover both offer to work out which is best. I opted for Warranty Direct because Skoda didn't have one to sell in March this year when the original 3 year warranty was up.

Just had a phone conversation with local skoda service centre and for £360 quid the warranty covers everything electrical/mechanical except wear and tear items. And they would not worry about the starter motor and be happy to fix that under the warranty.

ok update for you. went to the skoda garage who did the diagnostics on my fault light that had just come on and also looked at the starter motor. turns out it needs a new starter, plus the throttle body needs cleaning possibly replacing the is a hole in the intercooler pipe, and the overrun valve needs replacing. :(

This adds up to 250 for the first stage, plus 160ish for the starter, plus potentially 400 if it needs a new throttle body....

But amazingly they still offered the warranty for 360 quid. so I jumped at it. seems a comprehensive warranty too. :)

Well done, and well done to Skoda for allowing you to do the warranty too, just make sure that work is covered by the warranty before they leap on your car.
