Yeti DSG Shudder revisited - request for

I was a proud owner of a Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI DSG Elegans, purchased in the UK in February 2010, one of the first DSG's off the production line, I believe.  I see in these forums that DSG shudder is a well-known problem to members, though doesn't seem to be to Skoda UK.  It has just happened to me - in first and reverse gear - after only 31,000 miles. I think this is pretty outrageous, costing me £5K for diagnosis and a new gearbox. 

 

On the day of the gearbox replacement, I asked for the old gearbox to be packed up and put in the boot, in case I needed to have an independent engineer look into it.  I was then told I would have to pay a £1200 surcharge to retain ownership of it.  Given the huge outlay for the replacement, and the need to get the Yeti back on the road, I reluctantly backed down.

 

I have complained to Skoda UK, and have not got very far, which also seems a common response.  I am well aware that I am beyond the warranty period of three years, but it seems reasonable to expect the gearbox to last for at least the 60,000 miles that is the other part of the warranty, and for Skoda to make a substantial contribution to its replacement if it doesn't.  Their goodwill gesture was to pay for my next service.

 

I will be taking the matter further, and would like to compile a number of UK cases to make a bigger impression on the media and with regulators. Would members who have had similar issues be prepared to provide details, with evidence to back up their experience?  I just need expressions of interest at the moment, and the details/evidence later.  If you know of others with similar issues who are not members who might be interested, why not get them to sign up and express interest?  Anecdotal evidence won't be strong enough.  If anyone has tried this sort of collective action before, can you respond too, please

Is this a 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG (DQ200)

 

There was a World Wide Recall in 2013 which excluded the EU / UK.

In May 2014 Skoda UK Started a Service Campaign on the (DQ200), not all needed the Field Actions,

Changing the Synthetic Oil for Mineral and doing a Software Update. 

The Mechartonics Control Unit should be checked as well.

 

Skoda UK Customer Services know all about this, if you have this DSG.

There have been Clutch Pack Failures with early boxes and MCU Failures and DSG's have required replacing in and out of the Original Warranty, as Skoda UK CS well know.

 

Fundamental Design, Manufacturing, and Quality Control of Components, and then lack of action soon enough from VW / Skoda.

It's your (YOUR) gearbox isn't it?..........or was their some agreement with VW/Skoda UK that the repair was on an 'exchange basis' - effectively a subsidy for the true cost of a new box?

If not, it sounds outrageous, as its your possession they're withholding, surely.

The failure of the box adds almost 20p/mile to your costs.........happy motoring, I don't think.

Doesn't take much these days to write off a modern diesel in particular.

After the DSG there's the HPFP, DPF, EGR, injectors.

A manual FWD TSI looks like a safer bet.

I wanted to stick with a VW Group car and was initially looking at second hand.

 

But after researching a number of cars (including Yetis) with different engines and gear boxes etc. I went off (was frightened off!) so many because of various problems that when 0% was offered on the Yeti for a new one I jumped at it. Pretty damning for VWG isn't it. The problems not the Yeti!

 

In some ways I regret selling my 58 plate Passat estate. It was a DSG and had the Mechatronic unit replaced under warranty but apart from that it was problem free. I took an extended warranty out on it (manly because of the DSG) and then promptly sold it to a work colleague! It's been a cracking car for him and is still going strong. I have a tinge of regret whenever I see it. My head was turned by an A6 Avant which I kept for 12 months - lovely car but it was a mistake buying it. My fault not the car's!

Yes I did get the recall for synthetic/mineral oil and software update done, by my supplying garage, this time last year.  The problem emerged after that, and I went to a second Skoda garage to check it out.  After ruling out other reasons for shudder, they did a gear oil check, and found it with lots of swarf, therefore a mechanical clutch problem (they had tried reprogramming it whilst running &c).  Did the first garage  see anything in their gear oil check?  The Skoda customer service investigation allegedly looked into this, but didn't give me an answer.

 

So, no-one with direct experience out there?
