Engine cut out twice today....?!

Featured Replies

Hi folks. The engine cut out twice today on my 14 plate octavia vrs 184 diesel DSG. First time I was approaching lights and it was as if it had stalled?? Second time was on my way home from work driving along at about 40mph and it just cut out. No warning lights, no power etc. Free rolled into a lay by put it into P and restarted. Very odd.

I've only had it a couple of weeks and today was the first journey I had done over 20 miles. Not sure if this has anything to do with it....

Obviously it's still in warranty so I'll have to take it in for some diagnostic scanning but has anybody heard of this before?

Call skoda assistance. Just had someone out for mine. Brilliant service.

Ahh right ok. So despite the fact technically it's working ok at the moment they will come out and investigate anyway?

Was under the impression they were just like the AA. More of a rescue service?

IMO I would be extremely unhappy driving it at all in case the engine cuts at a less satisfactory moment than you've already experienced. I'd call them and explain the problem, and that you're not happy to drive it until it's been looked at.

I thought that too. But the chap got here, pulled a laptop out checked for faults etc. Unfortunately he couldn't fix my particular fault due to location of the sensor that's broken.

Yeah you have a good point. If it had happened on the motorway or a busy juntion it would have been much less of a happy ending. I'll call the dealers in the morning.

Bit of a pain in the bum. Disappointing as I've been so happy with the car. Hopefully this won't put a dampener on it.

Maybe I could call them tomorrow and say it happened on my way to work and get them to come and look in the work car park. Save me booking it in at the dealers. Be good to just have the codes read if nothing else.

Were you driving in ECO mode ?

There was a known problem & software updates for diesels running with DSG to resolve this.

There were a couple of threads about this perhaps around 6 months ago but I cant seem to find them.

There was also a thread with a "recall" where some drivers had been contacted to come in to have the DSG software updated for this issue.

Either way a DSG should never stall.

Take it to the dealer or call Skoda Assist to get someone to look at it.

I was in ECO mode yes Gabbo. I called skoda assist today. They came out to take a look. Did a scan of error codes and found nothing untoward. So he looked at known issues and found something that vaguely looked similar which suggested an engine ecu update. So he did an ecu update. And left it at that. Guess now I've got to suck it and see. Intermittant faults are the worst!

Where did you buy it from - hopefully not a main dealer?

This is a known fault that a software update has been made available for about a year.

If you have purchased from a main dealer I would be back on the phone to them asking them why as many of the checks that they do for a Skoda approved used car they didn't bother to apply a software update to fix a known issue.

Yes it was a main dealer unfortunately. They did seem a bit slap dash. I'm still waiting for the missing owners handbook and service book. I guess I've been suckered into the false sense of dealer security.

Don't think you'll get a service book for a 14 plate, they went 'electronic' by then I think

Ahh right. So if/when I come to get rid of it and I want to sell it second hand, how do I prove the service history??

Ask the dealer for a print out

I've had this happen to me on the M25 whilst doing 65mph!  My car cut out whilst using the adaptive cruise control and running in Eco mode, during the same journey I also lost drive to the wheels and got it recovered.  Whilst at the dealers they carried out recall 24AU which relates to an 'issue' with the clutch disengaging or not re-engaging properly whilst in Eco mode.  This didn't cure the problem either just now have 3-4 second long cut outs.  This time another dealer found a TPI relating to this issue and updated the gearbox software.  Maybe this will help you out, if you take it to the dealers they will probably tell you that no fault codes are found as that's what happened and is still happening with my car.

Due to this issue my car has now spent nearly 20 weeks off the road since last May, they'll happily put me in hire cars (C-Class 3 weeks, C-Class 1 week, Yeti 1 week, Passat Alltrak 1 week and X5 12.5 weeks) yet they won't replace a single component on my car despite spending nearly £20,000 keeping me in the X5.  Yes they gave me a £60k car to  replace a £28K car.......

As suggested by AndyVee, I would go to your main dealer & ask them to check your car again for the latest updates for this issue.

For the ECO stalling issue I believe there was an Engine ECU and Gearbox update released at different points (I think Back1980 suggested this too).

If you are good at negotiating, you could ask for a free service or something like this for the inconvenience because I'm sure you paid for a PDI check when you bought the car which they obviously didnt do corectly.
