does nobody sell Superbs privately?

Featured Replies

I'm generally keeping an eye out for a 2nd hand Mk2 Superb but I notice there is virtually no cars for sale privately....  they seem to come up on here very rarely too where as there is a reasonably constant stream of Fabia and Octavias of all ages.

Does the Superb only attract owners that trade in do you think?  Or is it just the wrong time of year?  I guess they are probably the least common of the the Skoda family too.

I much prefer to buy privately than line a dealers pocket, particularly as its normally cheaper, you get better history, and often more cherished cars....

There was one for sale roadside round here, I'll have a look if it's still there and get some details, but there was something about it that said "small time trader" to me.

To be fair though, it's probably like trying to buy a Mk1 Avensis was a few years ago, the minute it goes up for sale, it gets bought for taxi duty.

I had a 1.8TSi Elegance for sale on here, EBay and Auto trader recently. Hardly any interest at all. In the end, I sold it privately on Ebay for £3700, against a Glass's Guide price of £5050.

Sorry I didn't realise from your first post you were be so specific, but I did miss the estate from your second post.  150 miles isn't that far to travel for the right car, I travelled nearly 300 miles to pick up my Superb.

It's all good.

But even if I just filtered for private and under 60k there are only 2.

The Superb is a rare car, most are company / fleet owned so by the time they make their way onto the private market they are old / high mileage / already dead.

Mine will be going that way soon, have the option to buy before it goes.

High mileage doesn't mean a thing if the car has been used for intercity driving and has been serviced properly. I'd buy a high mileage car where the miles are put up on the open road over a low mileage car that's been driven in traffic jams all its life any day (In fact I did). If you're looking at any diesel with a DPF that's even more true.

Be more patient, it took almost 3 months (and loads of tesdrives) to get hands on my superb. Especially if you have a long list on your mind of extras.

Completely agree, if I were buying secondhand, a well maintained high mileage car that has sat on a motorway for most of its life would be far more preferable. Think of all those diesel Qashqais and SUVs that have never done more than the school run - some unsuspecting buyers might be getting more than they bargained for there as those cars begin to come on to the secondhand market!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone, yes agreed that high mileage isn't necessarily a problem, but from experience when cars start getting 100k+ things generally start wearing out, I know its unlikely for an engine to go pop or something like that its little niggly things that go, like bushes, shocks, ball joints, CV Boots etc.

But this does bolster the argument for trying to find a private car.  No way of knowing how a car on a forecourt has been driven, just because it has high miles doesn't mean its only been used on the motorway and if it has low miles it doesn't mean its only been used around town.

I have looked into leasing and there are some cracking deals out there but the uncertainty about lead times is putting me off.

I guess patience is the key or just go to a dealer!

You have no way of knowing how a private car has been driven either. I sold my MK1 vRS, and looking at it you would never know it had spent its fair share of time doing several hundred laps of the Nurburgring and UK track days. She was a one owner car, 4 years old at the time with 30K miles on it and full main dealer history. However as I said it spent a fair chunk of that time around the rev limiter.

If I had come to buy it from you privately and asked about how it had been driven would you not have mentioned the track days?

I've run up thousands of miles on young cars on long countrywide trips. Far better for the car than tootling around town with lots of short journeys. Cars need to be used , they aren't animals they are machines and being used continously suits them
