Private Plate Transfer Help

Featured Replies

Never done this before and I need some support.

I need to transfer a private plate off my Dad's car (to prepare it for sale) and put it on my mum's car.

I know I can do this online but is this one movement (Dad to Mum) or two movements (remove from Dad AND then add to Mum).

Secondly, Mum's car is on finance (through VWFS) - I presume I'll need to advise them before I do it?

includes required downloads :)

it's very simple to get a plate off your car, but you must finalise it before selling car or you forfeit the plate.

I can'r remember discussing this with finance companies at any time in the past, but for peace of mind it might be worth a call.

I removed mine a few weeks ago because i was selling my car. You just do it online and pay the £80 fee and it came off instant and just informed the insurance and put my old plates back on. The registration goes on retention and you get the paperwork back within the week and that's that.

Would it not be easier just keeping the private plate on retention and when you dad gets a new car he can transfer it onto that car? The £80 fee you paid to take off the car is the only fee you pay, so when you want to put the plate on another car it's free (as long as it's done in 10 years).

Long story but Dad won't get another car so Mum is having the plate.

So we only pay the £80 once then.

Does it reissue the original plate back onto the car?

Yep, much easier now than it used to be. Was surprised when I've retained my plate, now the Yeti's for sale.

When you retain, it should tell you straight away what plate the car is going back onto. 99% of the time, it will be the plate it was originally issued with - but they never absolutely guarantee this.

Then you'll get the paper retention certificate through in the post, as well as a revised V5 for the car the plate's been transferred from. Usually within 5 days.

Just sold a car that was in my wife's name and bought a replacement car for myself, for which my personalised plate has moved to.

Easiest (and seemingly only) way to do it, is to use this weblink (https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number) and get the registration plate off the car. This, as stated above costs £80 and puts the plate onto a retention certificate. Then you go to ( https://www.gov.uk/put-registration-number-vehicle )  when you have the retention certificate and the replacement V5 (you don't get a replacement MOT cert) and then fill in the on-line form (has to be done Mon-Sat between 8am and 6pm) and put the plate onto any car you like (no matter who the owner is).

The only stumbling block is if your private plate is an age related plate and newer in age than the car its going on but sounds like your mums car is the newer so should be no problem.

You cannot make a car appear newer than its original registered year but you can always make a new car appear older with an age related registration plate.

It's a J*** XYZ registration so no issues with age. Mum's car is '14 plate.

Cheers.

No issues with a 91/92 plate then :)

All done, thanks everyone.

Still cannot fathom out why an online service is only open 0800-1800 though?

Might be security or background check related? That the system is actually monitored.

Could also be to manage demand.
