New purchase woes

Featured Replies

Just picked up a 2014 Octavia last night from a local Ford franchise (my first Skoda!), but now kicking myself for not being more thorough with checking the car over before buying. They only supplied one key ("not our fault - that's what the last owner supplied"), there is no handbook and service book, and the parcel shelf is broken. What rights do I have, especially as I've now driven it off their forecourt? The key is particularly annoying as it's a family car so both me and the wife use it, and I don't want to be paying £150+ to get a second key cut.

Re the parcel shelf - the plastic pegs in the pillars either side of the window are missing, where the parcel shelf strings hook on. They've obviously snapped at some point, so there are just holes where they once protruded. I haven't had a chance to see what DIY job I can do yet - at worst it might have to be a couple of screws if I can get some to fit the holes, but wondered if anyone had a better fix? I wondered if the original pegs would have been fitted from the inside (somehow), or if they just "snap in" from the outside - if so, whether I can get replacements?

Have you contacted the garage?

You should have a 14 day period of satisfaction after buying where any issues should be resolved.

You can get the handbook online for free. There is also a Skoda app that has a portable version.

The car may never have had a service book. Mine didn't since VW uses digital service records now. You can probably get confirmation of past servicing from Skoda.

Some places require that a new buyer can have contact info from the previous owner. That may be a way to get the other key back.

I'd be expecting the supplying dealer to be fixing all these issues or I'd give them the car back..............

With regards to the 2nd key I would be thinking along the lines of who has the 2nd key & what can they do with it ;)

If the garage can't provide you with the original 2nd key, they should be providing a new one, deleting all the existing keys & reprogramming them.

Nothing to stop someone from following you home & coming to collect your nice new car from your driveway in the night using the 2nd key.

Re the parcel shelf.

I take it the shelf itself still has the strings on it and just need securing to the pillars? If so, can you attach a small piece of metal or plastic to the end of the string which is slightly wider than the hole forming a 'T' at the end of the string, then feed the metal bit fully into the hole. When it's in it won't come back out of the hole as it will be too wide.

Dealer has an obligation to sort your issues...if they dont just start formal proceedings to return the car to them as you have a 14 day cooling off period in the UK.

The key issue is a tricky one....providing the lost key is unpaired from the car there is less risk but probably wouldnt stop someone popping the lock cover off and accessing the car via the key blade...they just wouldnt be able to start the car.

Id personally want the locks changed to be sure....but sure as schizzle the dealer wont want to front the cost of that....id make a demand either the retrieve the 2nd key and code strip (little plastic tag that allows dealers to easily make copies) or replace the locks and keys via a main dealer.

They should fix the parcel shelf even if it means replacing it.

RE service book....most Octavias from MY14 went to electronic service records so there is no service book...but all other handbooks in their folder should remain. Should replace them too if missing.

Given their current attitude Id consider taking it back for a refund and wishing them the best of luck with selling it on...might be easier.

I'm with pipsyreturns - should it got stolen (and there's no proof the lost key has been disassociated from the car) you may well find an insurance company declining to pay out.

A 1 year old car you really should have 2 keys supplied, a 6+ year old one is debatable.

The rear parcel shelf supports should just clip in and I'm guessing now but shouldn't be more than £5-6 each.

Get onto the salesman (in person at the dealership) then the manager then I have found that letters to their head office work wonders.

Thanks for all the replies. Our local Skoda dealer has quoted a whole 38p for the parcel shelf pegs, so that's okay.

I'm about to let the wife loose re the missing key - you wouldn't like her when she's angry...

What a pain, would start with a polite conversation with the dealership and see how they respond. You don't have a 14 day cooling off period, this only applies to on-line or over the phone purchases as far as I am aware.

You do have the consumer rights act which came into force in October this year. Info can be found on the AA webiste:

Hope you get things sorted without too much hassle, best of luck.

Sorry was incorrect in my statement but I am sure with any consumer credit agreement you have a period of time where you can get out of the deal....assuming the vehicle was financed.

Your covered under the sale of goods act. They have to rectify the faults or refund you.

Re. the parcel shelf, if it's just that the pegs have snapped these are very easily replaced and very cheaply obtained. I broke one of them but got replacements from my local Skoda parts counter.
