External Door handle peeling

Featured Replies

Took my '03 motor into the  local main dealer on Monday  for replacement of the front passenger side window regulator (1.5 hours of labour and a total inc bill of £215 thank you very much). Picked-up the car in the evening, and all seemed OK with the window (Although it appears they had been a bit sparring with the vinyl window trim  lube).

Didn't use the car again until yesterday, when I discovered in the daylight, that the coating on the external door handle was covered in a sort of grease and  had started to peel in a serious fashion - as far as I'm aware it was pristine when it went in.

Does anybody know how this is likely to have happened, given the standard procedures for regulator replacement - prior to the repair, I had temporarily taped some clear plastic over the window (Cause the window glass had fallen into the door cavity) but. as far as I remember, there was no tape on the door handle.

Had a closer look today, what I thought was peeling, is in fact the remnants of the box-tape adhesive I used to secure the temporary plastic sheeting over the window. I managed to rub some of it off using a tissue, but there's a stubborn bit left. What's the best solvent to get this off - ideally something which won't damage the handle finish - meths ?

"Sticky stuff remover" sounds about right.

I'd just use brake cleaner personally since I've got a load in the garage.

WD40 is good at dissolving tape and sticky label adhesives.
