What cloth/jobs for different cloths?

Featured Replies

Now I'm probably over thinking this one but after the detail today I began thinking about getting different colour microfibers for different areas of the car, something like this maybe?

Buffing, one colour for paint, another for wheels?

Cleaning Wheels/door shuts

Glass

Interior

What does everyone else do/use, any recommendations on where to get some of each type that won't cost a bomb?

I Don't use different colours for different jobs, although it's a decent idea!

But I used different quality cloths for different jobs. I use the cheaper Kent cloths for tar removal and exhaust polishing and I use a much higher quality cloth for polish and wax removal as to be nice and gentle on the paintwork.

Best high quality cloth I use is this which are reasonably priced.

But any high quality cloth will do it, there are thousands around!

To start with - i think the Costco/Eurow microfibre (MF's) at approx 350gsm are good for most jobs;

and they are absolutely superb for the price - circa £14 per pack of 36.

Personally, now i tend to keep these for mainly interior work, door shuts, wheels and engine bay etc.

For paint work i try to use a 500gsm MFs and above to minimise any and all marring of paintwork.

I have found a range of CarPro BOA's now in Orange, grey, blue and green - so i can colour code these;

as you suggest and so far so good - it's working quite well.

On glass - i highly recommend the waffle weave type cloths to minimise smearing and also dropping fibres - which can be annoying.

A good place to shop is below - Elliot is very helpful and efficient:-

Hope this helps - let me know if you need any more info.  :thumbup:

Great info Ste. Interesting read for all of us!

I use a Gtechniq 'Diamond Sandwich drying towel' for drying the car (soaks up the water beautifully).

Microfibres for general use, Power Glass cloths for glass and suede cloths for applying sealants.

There is much OCD surrounding MF towels

Getting one brand to do it all may be a challenge

Whilst there is no denying that softer the better is preferable, I find that the general purpose 'Kirkland' ones obtainable from Costco to be more than adequate and safe for most uses and are a bargain

I use a slightly softer type for buffing off waxes...I use CarPro orange ones...cant remember the full name

Drying:

There's not much better than my present towels:

Chemical Guys Woolly Mammoth and Paragon Diamond weave ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BYGN3XU/ref=s9_hps_bw_g263_i4 )

Car pro boas are amazing. Yes they are pricey but worth the cost. I agree just get cheap ones for dirty jobs like the engine bay and wheels. These can be thrown away then for cheapness.

I use a waffle weave one for the windows like Ste, and a quite expensive one I bought singularly for the leather as both products I don't want the products I use to get on paint work. The rest are used according to cleanliness , as they get dirtier, ( still washed I use on wheels) when there really ingrained its for stainless exhaust or for my bike, one use on my bike and I bin them, the weather salt/grime/oil puts paid to them , but they don't owe me owt

Ste- Where can I get the different colour Boa's? Looking at the car pro website they only seem to do the Orange 350gsm or Grey 500gsm.

Nice one Ste, you've certainly been shopping around :)

I would not be tempted to buy cheep ones of eBay bay as some of of them have hard bits where they have sealed the seams with a hot knife

Guys, recommend me a waffle weave cloth, my least favoutite job is the windows never seem to be able to get a decent finish.
