Fabia mk2 DRLs

Featured Replies

Hello, my fabia was first registered May 2011, with the UK law introducing DRLs for vehicles registered from February 2011. My car doesn't have the fog light cluster I thought the DRLs are housed in and there is no switch in the fuse box. Don't suppose some cars were produced with DRLs in the main light cluster or something?

Thanks

Hi

It was introduced in February as you say but only on cars that where updated after that, cars that where already designed prior to this dos not legally have to have them. Is your car pre or post facelift? The facelift was late 2010 so the 5J was already 'type approved' before the legislation came out and therefore did not legally have to incorporate DRLs until further changes were made to the model.

Even the 'All New 2015 3rd Generation Fabia'  did not need DRL's fitted by the manufacturers because the All New Car was another Face Lift and never got 'New Type Approval', and runs on the Type Approval the Mk2 Fabia Pre Facelift got.

So not 'Type Approved' after February 2011.

Ahh I see! Very interesting info, thanks guys :)

Assuming you have the black plastic blanks in the bumper below the headlights...

Source a set of the Skoda combined fog light and DRL clusters off eBay...

Plenty on eBay, here is a pair I found after a quick search...

The black plastic panels just pull out and the fog light cluster simply screws in its place.

Depending on your electrical skills you can fit an aftermarket DRL kit that will ensure the DRL's turn off when you turn on side lights or dipped headlights, similar to this...

If you want the fog lights to work too then you'll need some additional wiring, a new headlight switch and some coding, quite a bit more complicated, but given how infrequently front fog lights are needed you could leave them inoperative, they are not tested during the MOT.

Another cheaper and simpler option would be to buy some aftermarket LED DRL strips...

Ignore the funky music but this video shows how simple the grill removal and fog light installation is. This is on the Octavia but the Fabia is very similar...

If the OP put a cluster in as you suggest silver101 there wouldn't be any wiring there so I assume he would need the wiring kit as well from your second link, regardless of OEM or aftermarket. Would that be right?

Yes, if you use the genuine Skoda fog/DRL clusters you'll need to source an additional 'DRL wiring kit'.

If you bought aftermarket LED DRL's (such as the Philip's kit) then these usually come with everything you need to splice into the cars existing wiring loom.

Awesome! Thank you for all the info, really appreciate it. Will try and get a hold of some oem ones in the new year, depends on cost and how much time I get!

Thanks everyone and merry Christmas!

So if I bought the OEM fogs and wiring kit would that be everything I needed to get up and running?

For 'native' functioning what would I need in terms of fog light wiring, switch etc?

The fog lights and DRL's have their own wiring. On cars without these fitted from the factory I'd imagine the wiring won't be there.

Adding an original wiring loom would be pretty complicated I'd guess.

The DRL's should be pretty simple, especially if you use one of the dedicated aftermarket wiring kits available on eBay. All these do is tap into the side light wire on the back of the headlight so that he DRL's turn on with ignition but more importantly turn off when side or dipped headlights are turned on.

To get the fog lights working will be more difficult I'd imagine as you'll need to source a new headlight switch with the extra setting / position for the front fog light function. It can be done, there are several threads over in the Octavia forum but I'm not sure what similarities the Fabia shares with the Octavia.

Thanks silver, I guess I'll go with the non-oem lights for now, not feeling all that adventurous!

So you say these will turn on with ignition but off when side or main lights are switched on? This just piggybacks the sidelight connection? Sounds cool :)

Thanks

Yeah, the Philip's set I linked in post #5 are really good, with them being from a reputable company they are good quality with easy to follow instructions.

Check out this video too, expensive but worth it...

I've picked up a pair of Monte Carlo DRL's to fit to my SE, anyone know what type of socket this is? And where I might get the plug for it? cb92cbed671cabd8968851446a6c04e1.jpg

Edited by ratkat

What is on the other end of the plug? Is it the bulb or a wiring harness? It looks like a H8 bulb but not sure. Is that the DRL unit with built in Fog lamps? What if any wiring plugs do you have on the car to offer up to this socket?

That is the bulb holder for the DRL part of the Monte Carlo FOG/DRL light unit. I don't have the wiring on my SE, hence the need to wire it myself. The Fog light socket is an H8 but this one is different to that, the pins are the opposite way round.

Are the LED strips and brackets flexible? I would like to,fit them to the blank end grills which are curved.

The LED strips from Phillips are all straight, but they are really designed to be recessed into the bumper, or in your case the black plastic fog light blanking caps.

The YouTube clip above shows how the guy cuts out a hole in the cap to fit the LED bar into. I'm sure you could pack out the screws / bolts to ensure they are facing forward.

You can buy curved ones but there are a lot of aftermarket DRL sets out there that simply aren't very bright, the LED's are spaced too far apart or are just poor quality. Sticking with the likes of Phillips or Osram will ensure they will look as OEM as possible.

Thank you, I do want decent ones and possibly cutting a hole hole would allow them to slot back in. I'll have to think about whethe I want to do that. Philip also advise some that give a single continuous light like some of the latest cars are fitted with but they wed close on double the price.

Can't edit. Stupid predictive text. Meant advertise, not advise.
