What would you do?

Hello everyone.

I may possibly order a Skoda Superb tomorrow, if a deal can be done. I am still a little undecided on the spec, however.

I have decided to go petrol, 1.4 TSI ACT, as I am getting a bit fed up of diesel. I had a RTA on the M6 in November and was given a petrol Mercedes C Class automatic while my BMW 1 Series was being repaired. I loved how smooth it was, but was constantly scared of stamping my left foot on the brake. I had to peel my wife and kids off the windscreen on a number of occasions.....

This is one reason why I am going to steer clear of the DSG, wonderfully smooth though it is.

However, my dilemma is the spec. I am just a humble family man, who is buying privately, so cost versus spec is an issue for me. A lot of reviews recommend the SE spec. I personally like the SEL executive spec, as I would like leather, as it is easier to keep clean with the children. This cost difference is £3,000, however.

The reason for the change in car is that I have two beautiful, autistic children, who are struggling with the lack of space in the back whenever I carry 3 rear passengers. I know that the Skoda Superb is the sensible choice, and is built every bit as well as the BMW, if not better, and I know the huge amount of space will create a calmer environment for them.

As the tile says.....what would you do, having had the opportunity to own one for a while now?

Many thanks for your time.

Hello,

If i was a private buyer, i would be looking at the Skoda used cars, (ex demo's) some great spec'ed cars about and no worry about the long lead times...

If you wanted to do diesel though, an SE Business is the sweet spot in the range for spec v price.  (couple on Skoda used cars now)

Likewise, and for very much the same reasons of lead time and avoiding initial deprecitation.

Alternatively rather than pay over the odds on an ex demo (usually list price or thereabouts) go via a broker where you can find discounts of around 20% meaning you may be able to afford a better specced car than what you 1st thought.

The sel exec is a nice spec and if you can stretch the extra 3k then I would consider it. Though there is nothing wrong with the se. I love the dsg, I have it on my current Octavia vrs, and I had some early moments after converting from a manual. But you soon get used to it and I'd not go back, especially on a luxery model such as the superb. But that's not everyones preference

Hi Gizmo68.

I am being offered 12% off the list price with 0% finance on HP, as the trade in value of my car is more than 50%. This will work out in my budget for both cars, and I am comfortable with that.

I don't want to go down the PCP route, as I honestly do not think it is for me. I know many use it and it works well for them, but I'm not comfortable with it. The price for my trade-in isn't too bad, considering how much the 1 Series depreciates.

What I don't want to do is buy SE spec and regret it, wishing I had a few more toys, neither do I want to look back and regret 'wasting' £2,000. The actual cost difference is £2,011 after discount. I should mention I was going to add 18" Pegasus wheels and rear camera to the SE spec. Both cars include metallic paint.

That is my dilemma (although not a bad dilemma really....)

That isn’t a bad deal considering you would have no hassle in shifting the BM.

Brokers will sell you a car on PCP, PCH or even a cash sale so you can finance it however you wish.

What are the items you ‘must have’? xenons? leather? etc

Narrow down the items you really want on the car then see which spec included it as standard compared to adding them to a lower specced model.

Personally i wouldn’t buy any car without (in no particular order):

Cruise control

heated windscreen

Electrically adjustable heated seats (in either leather or maybe alcantara)

Xenons

However our ’needs’ are all different what is important for me may be no interest to you.

if your buying the 1.4 act engine then read the reviews others have said.

quite a few have said ( and not just on this forum ) that they feel the gear ratios are just too far apart with the manual 6 speed gearbox but the dsg is just right ( especially around town )

I would test drive a manual if you can find one.

i haven't driven a manual ( with this engine ) to confirm but mine has a dsg and its good round town as well as on the main roads.

my last car was a manual and this one a dsg - you get used to it quickly

Hi Dean,

My wife and I too were involved in a RTA back in June and our MKII was written off by drunken lady. Just had it replaced by MKIII. We are private buyer too. I can confirm the car will offer good protection to both you and children if MKII is any comparison. I have to be honest and advise the customer experience and communications via dealer has been awful for us with eventual delivery of a damaged car. I would say try a broker or a dealer with recommendations and enjoy the discounts. Go for best spec you can and the leather seats will definitely be good choice. Shame you cannot enjoy the DSG as it is really excellent if you can rest your left foot somewhere. Promise you its one of those features that you would never want to be without after a few days use....

Hope this helps?

Take the the SEL with the extras you want if you are undecided. Nothing worse than getting a car and then wishing you'd got the higher spec - especially if you have to keep it for a number of years. On the other hand, buy an overspecced car and just put it down to experience next time - better to have than to not have.....

Definitely upgrade the lights, the standard ones are poor.

The space inside is immense. Family trip out (it's normally just me in it 90% of the time), and my daughter had so shout to be hear from the back!! By the time we arrived home her voice was nearly gone - next time the wife is going in the back!!   :notme:  :notme:

So, so glad I got the estate - it's been a great workhorse so far. Shame it will all be going back come the end of Feb as I'm being made redundant (Company Car).

So sorry to hear about the redundancy jstallan. Hope you find something soon.

I was in the same position almost four years ago but it worked out for the best in the end.

Hello everyone.

Many thanks for your replies, I really appreciate it.

Having thought long and hard, and having chatted with a few dealers who knew they were not going to get my business, I have put a deposit down on a Skoda Superb 1.4 TSI ACT SEL Executive manual in business grey. Delivery time is 10-14 weeks (including delivery).

I have seen this colour in the flesh and think it looks really classy.

I may add the LED interior lights. These sort of features can really keep children on the Autism Spectrum calm, and I am hoping that the limo like space and quietness of the cabin will really reduce their stress levels. Things we do for our kids eh? ;)

I have been offered paint protection at £499....I have beaten this down to £300, with no commitment yet. I am being told it takes six hours to apply and must be left overnight. If you had it, is that a good price, and is it worth it.

I managed to get the car for list less 12%, which I thought was pretty good. Being able to just drop the BMW with them is so good as well, as I can't be bothered with the hastle of selling privately. The price for the trade in was very respectable too.

Does anyone have any idea of depreciation on the Skoda Superb? The BMW, in terms of % lost, and cold hard cash, has been quite savage, to be honest.

Thanks again to everyone and sincerely wish jstallan all the best in find employment. Really sorry to hear that.

Take care everyone.

Dean

You sound like a really nice chap and I hope all goes well with the car and with your family.

With regard to the paint protection...if its being done by the dealer then they probably wont have the time or the skills to do it properly. I'd look for a professional detailer to do it.

All the best.

Mike.

+1 on the paint protection, get someone who details for a living to do it.

As for the LED interior light pack, I fully agree... the LED strips in the doors would be a very good idea for your kids (everyone that has seen them loves the look of them)

They offer that Life Shine here for €350 when I know it only costs them €170

Lol "life shine". There are two words there that are misrepresented. Can you guess which two ;)

Not too many S3 trade ins around at the moment so a bit sketchy to work out but I did trade in my 1.5 year old Octy Elegance to buy a new S3 and lost £10,000 on the deal about 3/5ths of the original price and I got a 20% discount on the new one.  Cried a bit but the S3 specced up to the eyeballs is the car that I wanted originally.  I love gadgets and can hardly wait, BW2 starts on Monday (I've been waiting since the 8th of August).

Congratulations on the order.

Dont do the paint protection it's overpriced. I dont know if you have any car cleaning skills, but a good wash and an application of a sealant like Meguairs NXT will protect the paint and keep it shiny for 6 months. Costs about £20.

With regard to depreciation, its a Skoda so not great. Run a few pcp quotes on the website and look at the guaranteed future values for an idea.

Hello all.

Thanks for the advice. I know it's sad, but I love washing my car...it is a little bit of an escape for me to unwind and 'wax on, wax off', without having to think about other things.

My BMW has never had a sponge near it. I use pre wash, jet wash, wash with two bucket method and wash mitt, jet wash to rinse, dry and admire. it still looks perfect, so I am more than happy to carry on doing that.

Anyway, I have used the money I have saved to buy Park assist, as I think that will really help around tight parking spaces.

Thanks again for all your input, really grateful to you all.

Dean

That's good then, you know how to look after a car.

Gtechniq do some good sealants for paint and alloys also.
