To DCC or to not DCC

Featured Replies

i need some help !

i am looking at a 1.4 150Hp, S3 and i don't know if the default suspension is good enough to give me a comfortable ride.

Are the Driving Mode Selection and Dynamic Chassis Control  worth 800 E ?

Thanks !

I don't have it on mine and wish I did. Not because of its comfort though, that's great. Just wish I could stiffen the suspension to make it more sporty.

Try it on some cobblestone road. I've found the difference negligible (comfort vs normal). Only more leaning in the corners which I did not fancy (previous cars all bmws)...

did test drive with 4x4 TDI and 4x4 280HP both had DCC. And bought 280HP without DCC.. didnt find justification for the €€€

I think its a big difference between comfort and sport.

When driving everything feels harder in sport mode especially on cobblestone but same on the highway. Prefer comfort now on winter roads though ,)

My other half suffers from motion sickness so Sport is essential for her. I use Normal mode if on my own.

I have to say my wife is registered disabled and the comfort setting is excellent for her. I also prefer comfort to what was the normal (no DCC) ride of our old MKII. As to its value for money I cannot advise....

final thoughts on the matter I won't be choosing DCC .

Other info:

I've made a drivetest today with a 1.4 TSI 150HP, manual, standard suspension , 3 people at 90Kg each,on road that was partially under construction and i can say that the engine is very acceptable, you don't have the feeling you ran out of power, i can do a takeover easily and the suspension is great.

Good to hear my 1.4 tsi act manual is due in a week or two with no DCC just didn't think it was worth the money in my mind, not even driven a car with the engine yet fingers crossed, well it should be considerably better than my Laguna 1.5 diesel, it is on paper anyway, looking forward to going back to petrol not had a petrol car for about 15 years now.

Cant wait to get the car just need to sell my Laguna as the trade in price was insultingly low, £4000 for a 61 plate car, fully loaded with only 36k on the clock. Would have preferred them to just say we don't want your trade-in.

On checking the vehicle settings on my 1.6 tdi SE via bolero, I noticed that DCC is set to normal, I can go into the menu and change it to sport, eco, individual and comfort, I didn't order this so am I right in assuming that this option is fitted to the car? or does this show in the menu system on all cars but does not actually activate the settings

What you are referring to is 'Driver Mode Selection' and not DCC. Driver mode changes steering, engine behaviour (by switching between the modes you outlined, normal sport etc) but this is different to DCC which is a little sophisticated and allows you to control the dampers/suspension set up i.e. make the ride softer or firmer. You might see this option also known as 'variable dampers' with some car brands.

Yes thanks for that, just done a little more digging and realised, apparently something to do with the ACC acceleration modes etc etc,

Never mind wishful thinking.

Also DCC is only available for 1.4 and 2.0 engines. This option is not available for 1.6 Tdi. FYI

I wish we'd gone for DCC.

Standard suspension for me is a bit too soft and wallowy, comfy enough if you just want to waft along on motorways etc.

Not sure it's going to help the kids travel sickness on holidays.

If you like to drive with any enthusiasm, or spend your life on twisty roads, then the standard suspension could leave you disappointed IMHO.

The car does feel big and not exactly nimble with standard suspension. I bought this car to be a comfy mile cruncher. However, it hardly feels wallowy or unsafe when going into bends. I feel it is a nice balance. It's all so subjective, the only way to decide is to try both types over all types of driving. I have a lotus Elan m100 for throwing round country roads yet it is a noisy bumpy ride on the motorway!

Are you sure its not drive mode selection you're referring to?  DCC is over €1K as an option on the 2.0 engines but I never saw it on the 1.6, even on the Irish specs....

DCC is not available on 1.6 TDI or Greenline.

I initially thought this. It felt much softer than my old Scout however recently I've been giving it some proper welly through bends I know very well and I can't say it's made much difference.... Of course the exit is much faster :-D

Comfort mode ,gave me a little nausea on a country road. As i've understood, the suspension in sport mode is not very pleasant if you happen to hit any potholes. Best compromise is suspension in normal mode and the rest in sport mode.

Apologies, i've drive mode select not DCC, I swear my brain is fried from all the terminology- DCC, ACC, SLA..........

Picked mine up last night went over some major speed bumps and some badly rutted and potholed roads last night on my way home, and I can say with confidence that the standard suspension set up is excellent road them better than my French laguna which is very comfy on bad roads. So all in all do I think i needed DCC and is it worth it, well its a nice gimmick that you might use every now and again but 800 quid I don't think so with the light petrol engine the car feels very balanced and a good amount of firmness to make it fun and sporty but comfy enough for all but the worst road conditions, and well if you come across them you can just slow down a bit. So I am glad I didn't spend the money on DCC as for me I don't need it. If money was of no concern then would I have put it on maybe but not sure how much I would use it though.

its a personal thing some poeple need that comfort setting some don't. There is no right or wrong just what suits you, but good luck with you decision,

Just to say as well the 1.4 tsi act is a great engine with plenty of poke doesn't feel under powered at all (75 mph just over 2250rpm not bad for a small petrol engine not needed to go above 3500rpm yet in general every day driving), in fact its pretty quick in my opinion  but that comparing it to a 1.5dci laguna so I might not be the best person to say whether its quick or not. For me its a lot quicker than what I had and a lot more fun.

Please can someone explain to me whether leaving DCC in Normal mode would be exactly the same as not specing DCC at all?  Or does other clever stuff happen too?

Thanks

Old thread this one! My understanding is that DCC is dynamic in all modes so it will be different to standard suspension. It’s certainly noticeable to me that the car’s level is maintained very well under heavy braking or acceleration. None of that dipping and bobbing you would normally expect especially in a car with comfortable suspension.
