Timing problems

Featured Replies

So my brother has a pd130 Ibiza and I've just fitted a 2260 ect, he bought a new cam, bearings and lifters all to be fitted at the same time.. I done this on my Vrs and all was well however his is slightly different and worrying abit.

I remember on mine using the locking tool at the bottom and the pin on top as you do and going from there but his the tool went in okay on the bottom but the pin was miles away at the top I thought this was rather odd anyway I took the cam out and the key bit for the cam pulley was facing down where as mine was facing up when I done mine, I put it all back together and now the timing is 8.4 on vcds it's shocking but the adjustments maxed out.. If I go back the other way it can't pick up the cam sensor

If I was to put the cam shaft up the other way with the key cut out facing up and adjust the pulley to the middle and put it together would I have problems with meeting valves?

Thanks

You didn't take any pictures did you mate when you did it?

I've also done this job on my fabia vrs but I'm far from an expert.

So as it currently stands, are you all the way over to one side of the adjustment window on the cam sprocket?

Could it be you weren't at top dead centre when you locked the crank off?

Edit: I'm questioning what I'm asking here even though I know what I mean lol I'm just having a look through the stuff I referenced when I did mine.

Unfortunately no pics silly of me really :(

Yeah the adjustment is fully to one side of the sprocket.

The crank was defo top dead centre and the cam was put in the same way it come out although I had no way of locking the cam.. So it could have moved?

Good call about TDC. Possibly was at TDC on the exhaust stroke rather than compression stroke when pinned.

The thing that makes me wonder the most is why the cam wouldn't lock in place and why the key was facing down

If the cam came straight off the tandem pump key way something was wrong as the cam should be still be stuck in place by the tandem pump key being in a horizontal position. I take it you turned the cam over 90 degrees before removing it and perhaps forgot to turn it back when you refitted it?

Havnt read everything but it wasn't possible your 180° out when you tried locking it?

Don't forget, crank turns twice for each turn of cam, so if cam was a half turn wrong when crank was pinned, crank should have been turned another 360 degrees.

It starts up but it's really rough! But maybe I should take the belt off and move the cam back one notch on the belt, as from what the adjustment is saying on the cam pulley it needs to go back to get it closer to the correct timing

Quite possible! Thinking about it now that's probably the reason..

Sounds like it needs to be stripped down with the belt off, timing pins put back in and timing set up from scratch with the proper tools again.

So it should definitely lock in place at the crank and cam there's no way of getting round the timing like if someone bodged it before?

What a bloody shame, I found the worst part of this job stripping everything out so you can get to the flaming belt! It's soul destroying.

Just be careful your valves aren't clattering pistons with your timing that far out (is that a risk?). Mine ran rough with the torsion value at +4 (iirc) so can only imagine what yours must be like.

Yes they should both lock. Both the crank and the camshaft are on keyways so the pulley is always in the same place, so the timing pins always need to line up and lock in place.

As above, the crank locking tool can go in in diff positions due to the crank and cam not matching each other in the amount they turn.

Looks like Hutchy was right it was 180 degrees out.. I've managed to get the timing in the right place and the belts back on and tensioned but I've had enough of it today so will continue tomorrow! Thanks for the speedy replies!

How would you tell if the valves are bent? It's set to 0.0 on the torsion but when you Rev it it's so loud from the air filter but sounds normal on tick over from the exhaust

If it's running without miss firing then valves are good. Lucky really shouldn't really be fiddling with thing you don't understand when they could lunch the engine.

Just taken it for a drive and it's really down on power and this is how loud it is..

Oh that's knackered mate whip the top off and see if the followers are busted first

You think the valves are okay tho? That's my main worry the valves, it's had brand new black tappets
