Hi I'm taking the drive shaft off the n/s and the bolts that hold it on to the gear box won't come out just keep slipping I'm using a trox 40 its the right size just keeping slipping when I put pressure on any help with this would be grate thanks

T40 isn't the right size, it's not torx its spline drive

Yeah I got the the spline bit its just slipping as I'm putting pressure on it 

If your bit says t40 on it mate it isn't a spline bit. If your using a spline bit where did you get t40 from in your first post?

Anyway, to the OP, a vital tool when doing this job is a hammer. Locate the tool in the bolt head, then before attaching ratchet or power bar, give it a few taps with the hammer to send it right to the bottom of the recess. You hear the tone change when it arrives.  Easy to not get it far enough in on limited access, limited visibility fasteners like these, unless you give it a hit.

As above,pretty shallow headed bolts that easily fill with crap.

If you can see they are dirty before you even put the spline bit in scrape around inside the bolt head with a small wire brush or a tiny screwdriver,then either blow it out or spray some cleaner in to remove it.

That thing they call Bristol is what I'd call Ribe, Alfa Romeo main bearing cap and conrod bolts used to use them. Hateful and unnecessary.

Most Fabia models I have come across have M8 Spline Drive bolts, however the vRS models (not sure if that includes the 1.9 SDI also) has M10 Spline Drives bolts.

FWIW, this page educates me to know that XZN/triple square is 90 degree angled points (three squares rotated 30 degrees relative to each other), spline is 60 degree angle points (four equilateral triangles rotated 30 degrees to each other). Anyone know which type the fasteners actually are? Seems to me that spline bits would fit in either head type, but be looser than they should be in an XZN. XZN bit wouldn't, in theory, fit in a true spline bolthead, I guess?

You are quite right Wino, IIRC Ford Pinto head bolts used to be spline whereas more modern tackle is generally XZN.

haha even ETKA just quotes "socket head bolt with inner multipoint head" as a part description :p

 

 

So does VAG even know which type of fastener head they use? lol

Can probably dig out a bolt out of a pile of random VW/Skoda 'that might be useful sometime around 2034 if I'm still alive' fasteners, and have a look with suitable magnification to see if I can tell which it is.

Never like to throw away good nuts/bolts or washers :)

On my vRS a driveshaft bolt had been hammered in (thread was completely shot) along with 4 of the 6 Spline heads rounded. So i just helicoiled the damaged thread and replaced the bolts with 6x M10 Hex Cap Head bolts of 12.9 Grade steel. Just keeps things simple then ;)
