Decided it is time to get some fogs & drl

Featured Replies

Bought the car a year ago (61 plat, so it is a FL), and never got around to buying any.

Had a quick look on ebay, and these were offered up http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291329788933

What I guess I am then left to do is to source the bulb holders and part of the loom - any ideas? I guess I can make up the loom, but will still need the holders (can't imagine there are many mk2 FLs in the nearby scrap yard willing to say hello to my wiresnippers)!  And then I'll need a new switch in the car, but lets go small steps!!

Thanks :-)

(I started this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/357724-front-fogs-and-drl-into-a-fl-se ages ago - shame on me)

This clip will give you a good idea what the bulb holders look like...

If you could check that would be champion :-)  In the meantime, I'll get on and order the assemblies.

Cheers.

Before you buy things, have you checked your BCM supports fogs and DRL's?

An easy way to check is to look for pins in A25/C25 for the fogs and C48/C49 for the DRL.

- 1K0 937 087 should do both

- 1K0 937 086 should do fogs, not sure about DRL

- 1K0 937 085/084 will need replacing

If you have a BCM that doesn't support DRL, then you'll need to use an aftermarket loom to turn them on/off at the right times but will loose any bulb monitoring.

Drats, ordered now!!  I'll check later when the rain stops (or maybe Monday!).  I assume I can get VCDS to pull that part number from something?  You'll have to forgive me - BCM, I used to much more simple cars like my old mk1, guess that is the light controller unit/module.

Bulb monitoring I do like, so it would be a shame to see that go.

Yeah VCDS will confirm which you have, do an autoscan and it'll be address 09 :-)

Drats, look like I have a controller which needs updating :-(

For DRLs, Skoda now use a long life version of the 21W bulb. A friend of mine was changing his drl bulbs two or three times per year on his 2011 Elegance Estate before the new bulbs became available. I don't know why standard bulbs fail so quickly but I guess it's something to do with location near the ground or vibration.

Nowadays I guess you could consider LEDs instead.

All manuals back to 2009 I've seen have always specified the DRL should be a P21W SLL (super long life) on the FL Octavia (apart from the VRS) so the bulbs have always been available. It's more likely the local dealer didn't stock the SSL version and used standard ones instead.

I've fitted 1156 Morimoto XB LEDs to mine which look great but there are a few things to consider:

- brightness, I believe a standard halogen is around 380lm so aim for that or slightly more

- beam pattern, the virtual filament style are pretty good

- bulb out warning, older BCM's will need load resistors, newer ones which support LED's can be have the warning coded out

- PWM, turn the brightness to 100% as most P21W LED's won't enjoy a PWM'ed power source

Drats, look like I have a controller which needs updating :-(

That sucks, you can either go down the replacement route (1K0 937 087 Q or R are the best bet if you intend to use LEDs) or create your own loom to control both the fogs and DRL.

I've dug out the connectors for you, just need to check they fit :)

I'm just giving an idea of what I'm working on at the moment, sorry images are so large :-(.. But only getting use to this site. Thank You.

Nice find, but I've now ordered a replacement BCM from ebay, and the new fog/drl assemblies arrived a couple of days ago.  Just need to order a switch and then make up the loom, and get the bulb connectors.... oh and then fit it all!

I'm going for the OEM approach, but good luck with yours :-)

I actually have no issue at all with the Octavia factory fogs, I think they're one of the best looking and fitting fogs on the road.... It's just these lower grills are so cheap and all these new LED options give us chance to play around with different looks,, when I set up the fog loom/wiring then I can just plug and play as I choose, I also have a solid LED assembly shaped like a letter 'L' on it's side, cheap as chips, and all with a nice sharp white light.....
