Front fogs and DRL into a FL SE

Featured Replies

I realise I am a probably out numbered a bit my vrs owners looking to do something similar, and have got a bit confused by reading previous posts on this topic.

I've got a 61 plate (FL) SE, and what I would like to do is add proper DLRs (as the car is black, so I really want to maximise my chance of being seen), and optionally add front fogs.  I guess I would need a new headlight switch as mine doesn't have the front fog option.

However what unit(s) should I be looking to buy to fit into the bumper, it appears that the VAG solution is 2 part and not one combined unit?

I've got a full version of VCDS, so can do the adaptions (as long as I know what they are).  Therefore in essence: what part numbers do I need to make this happen?

The DLRs are more important to me than the fogs, if that helps, although happy to do both if the cost isn't massive!

Thanks :-)

Standard fog/DRL's which I believe should just replace the two black sections on your bumper are: 1Z0941701C and 1Z0941702C. On top of that it's just wiring I suspect...

Not too sure where each for and DRL need to be wired to but I'd guess at the CECM. I can have a look later to see if I can find out anything more. This is for standard halogen DRL rather than the LED strip you see on the VRS though.

I'd prefer to go with the LED strip option (think they look better), but I don't want to embark on a massive challenge, which I get the impression it might be when I should be working on my house!  Does the standard DRL/Fog assembly just power one bulb at different brightness levels?

Any extra info would be a godsend - thanks, langers2k :-)

The standard DRL/fog does have two bulbs, a longlife P21w for DRL and the a H1 or H7 for the fog - I think it's a H1 but not sure.

If you want to stay genuine and opt for the VRS look, I'm pretty sure you'll need a new bumper and then the fogs (cheap) and LED's (expensive) on top. Bare in mind that the VRS LED has two uses, both sidelights and DRL with different brightness levels, I'm not sure of the wiring required to get this working as OEM. There was a Russian guy that did it including recoding the BCM properly but it's not possible using VCDS alone - if I find his post I'll let you know.

A simpler and cheaper option to get an LED strip might be these: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/New-arrival-2010-13-Skoda-Octavia-LED-DRL-daytime-running-light-with-fog-lamp-cup-top/118518_1472567216.html

They look almost OEM and give you an LED strip rather than a single halogen (or LED if you've changed the bulbs) but I have a feeling they aren't what you're after.

edit:

Found the blog post with the full process for correctly fitting a VRS front end, google translate works pretty well for this: http://skodapilot.com/2014/08/24/setting-bumper-octavia-a5-fl-rs/

The http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/New-arrival-2010-13-Skoda-Octavia-LED-DRL-daytime-running-light-with-fog-lamp-cup-top/118518_1472567216.html items look to be the ticket.  I don't really want to faff around sourcing a vrs bumper, etc, so the all in one unit  looks like it should do the trick and involve less work from me.

Guess these just require wiring up to the CCM (and probably a new headlight switch to allow the front fogs to be turned on)?

I know LED's look better but I've yet to see a set of aftermarket LED DRL's that look original.

Personally I would go for the standard halogen set-up for the genuine look...

You will need a new headlight switch and will need to add a small wire, this is covered on another front fog light thread somewhere.

To get the DRL's to work correctly (on with the ignition, off when headlights are on) and to provide power to both the fogs and DRL's will require some additional wiring in the engine bay too together with some VCDS tweaks in byte 18 in the central electrics.

Agreed, any of the stick on bars do tend to look awful and are normally badly placed. For instance these: http://www.showeller.com/product/Day_Running_Light/SKODA_Series_DRL/2012/1231/221.html

However the ones I posted earlier seem nice enough in photos but I'd like to see them in the flesh before committing to them.

Another option (DRL only) are http://www.carpartshow.com/product/Day_Running_Light/SKODA_Series_DRL/2013/0107/234.html but I'd not both with the optional turn signal.

To give you an idea what mine look like I just snapped a couple of pictures although they are quite flattering. It's not as uniform as this in person, I'll try and get a more truthful picture at some stage. Either resistors or VCP coding is required to remove the light out warning.

Now that looks quite good....   As I'll be in the car I won't see how uniform (or not) they are.

Thanks :-)
