Towing with the 1.4tsi (140ps) Estate

Featured Replies

I am considering this as my second car, with manual gearbox.

It will be used for garden trailer towing (not caravan).

I have an Ifor Williams P6E (fully caged) Unladen Weight 178kg, max Gross Weight 750kg.

Am I OK with this engine or should I go the newer 150ps

I don't want diesel.

thanks

I've towed a similar trailer with my 1.2 TSI without any issues. As the 1.4 is more powerful, you'll be fine.

The 1.4 TSi is a surprising engine. So long as you're in the right gear it feels like a much bigger engine.

I tow a 1100kg (official weight :D) caravan with the 140hk TSI without problems

I've towed Mk3 Astra on an 18ft car trailer, dunno how far over the limits that was but, it was still smooth.

Don't worry the 140ps produces more than the stated power...........& more still if run on Shell Nitro or similar..............& more than up to job of towing that trailer with load.........

How much more ???

I towed 1000kg-ish of caravan to France and back with my 1.4 Estate no problem.

Max tow rating for the car in Aus is 1500kg (braked) and I think 750kg (unbraked).

You'll be just fine with 140. I think the extra 10ps in the 150 is all at the top end of the rev range, so you wouldn't notice any difference in normal driving.

How much more ???

On the MK7 forum a member has the 122ps version & runs it on Shell Nitro & got it remapped. The before dyno run with car unmodified & using Shell Nitro recorded 139PS...................that engine has a smaller turbo & only one variable camshaft compared to the 140/150ps versions...................

My car (140ps) feels almost as fast as a mk4 Golf 1.8T 180bhp GTI which I used to do the mechanicing on & have driven..........

That is good to hear as I will be going from Octy Mk1 vRS to a 1.4 TSi 150BHP Octy 3.

Looking at the numbers it seems the 150BHP TSi produces more torque than the 180BHP 1.8T!

Also he has making 227Nm of torque (untuned & shell Nitro) & VW quote 200Nm...................

Linky to his thread/dyno figures here.............

I have seen the roller numbers on a slightly breathed on 1.4tsi and 300nM is very close.

The 1.4tsi has more than enough torque to move it's towing numbers.

I agree - my 1.4 TSi doesn't feel a lot different to my last 1.8 TSi, except possibly slightly more need to change down before booting it............

The 1.4 TSI 140 is very well suited for towing.

It is even best suited for towing than the 2.0 TDI 150, except from consumption point of view, obviously.

In most conditions the petrol will provide a better handling than the diesel for the additional load.

From 4th to 6th gear, this engine brings more or less the same torque value to the wheels than the diesel (a bit less in 4th, but more in 5th and 6th gears) but from significantly lower speed, thus providing a greater flexibility of use.

This can be observed by studying each model engine characteristics (power and torque engine curves) and especially the designed transmission ratios.

Indeed - the flat, wide, torque curve is exactly what you want and need when towing IMHO.

Very good info!

Also do you have the gear ratios for the MQB 250? 6 speed manual which is fitted to our cars?

I have a sneaky feeling that 4th seems to pull very well when overtaking from 50ish than 3rd for me............

Assuming your 1.8tsi was the mk2 and the Mk3 1.4tsi is possibly 80+kg lighter, then there would be little difference in their power/weight ratios.

Very good info!

Gear ratios may be different depending on the engine, even with the same gearbox reference.

I think you'll find the info you're looking for in the data sheet I've made available at the following location:

should not be the case.

We have established the OP will have no problems towing his garden trailer with the power provided by the 1.4tsi.

However there are a couple of factors that need to be taken into account.

1) I assume the trailer is unbraked, if that is correct then the trailer AUW of 750kg could exceed the vehicle unbraked towing max of 640kg.

2) The maximum towbar down weight is 80kg (not unusual for this size Euro car) and the OP will have to be careful how he loads the trailer to minimise the risk exceeded it.

Not saying that the car could not manage it in normal circumstances but in the event of an accident and overloading is identified then there could be legal and insurance complications?

Max trailer load without brakes is even lower for 1.4 TSI in manual gearbox:

- 620kg for the hatchback,

- 630kg for the estate.

There you go then - as long as you limit the trailer load to under 450kg or so (and load it correctly) it will be fine :)
