New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

People seem to live in some universe of their own in the UK with 60 MPH limits on the best roads, even if on the odd occasion they want to go twice that when nobody is looking.

Wet & Cold weather is the great leveller or just the width of the road and meeting oncoming traffic.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

My mate who swapped his M135i (5yrs ownership) for an R estate (1yrs ownership) is now swapping it for the new M40 (X3 with the 3lt petrol).....didn't like the ride in the "R" said it was too hard on the rough roads where he lives, & yes no shipping pucks & standard 18" alloys...I did suggest 17" & different tyres....but I knew he was looking for any excuses to ditch it to get a BMW again..he only tried the R to say he tried it & to reject it....IMHO.....& funny enough the M135i with big alloys had no problems with ride quality where he lives??...yeah right?...

Some people have to have the badge......& all cars on the never never...as that's a jump from £32k to £51K...

Did your mate have DCC option fitted. I had DCC fitted on my Rmk7 Estate @ now my current Rmk7.5 both handled and the ride was and is fine around my twisty and potholed A,B&C. One was on 18" Cadiz and current one on 19" Speilbergs.  Also ran Rmk7 3dr hatch without DCC on 18" later had a R mk7 5dr hatch with DCC on 19" Pretorias.

Don't know what he is complaining about.

Standard 18" alloys & non DCC.....& he just "tried " the "R" for a 1yr ..he's just a BWM fan & loves the 3lt straight six...& was finding "faults" to ditch the "R"...only reason he got IMHO was because I rate the "R" & he can't believe how good my car handles especially the way I drive it....mind you I'm on the same width of tyre (225) but on 17" which will fit around the 340mm "R" brakes....which is another option I told him.....he could have borrowed my other set as I have two sets one for winter the other for summer...& 18" on the standard "R" are fine..only when you spec 19" without DCC you problems..

But hey ho its not a BMW 3lt straight 6.......but I bet his M40 won't handle anywhere near as good as the "R" estate....too high, too heavy..& way too big rear tyres on standard spec 20" rims...that's his problem..tyre costs...I wonder how long before he moans about that cost & curbing them?...or will it have no problems..BMWs never have problems...no they just get nicked more than other makes....haha..

Not nicked much in Scotland, toe rags prefer their Golf / S3 or Merc 45 AMG when they can get them or top car of choice the fast Audi Estates.

Well chuffed with my manual Golf R.

Just been up around Midlands, then down to Chichester area visiting my daughter's, all in normal mode, around 800miles covered.

Motorways gave me a fairly constant average of 41mpg (computer) sensible 70-75 speeds (no silly accelerating).

Then a mix of A roads and dual carriageways, gave me an average of 36mpg - driven rather enthusiastically for a lot of it :)

My previous DSG wouldn't show above 34mpg (computer), no matter what mode I used and no matter how gently I drove it. Main difference was my DSG only had about 5k miles on the clock compared to the manual, which is around 23k miles for the same sort of trip.

So Ben, after all your mileage in both,   what is your preference in an all round driving experience world. Manual or DSG.

I had just over 8k miles in my old Golf R and 16k in my Golf SV, DSG but overall, manual for me :)

The DSG is super fast and allows for  lazy driving but I'm happy changing gear as and when I want.

Yep, me too Ben! In Golf R mk7 or mk7.5 and hopefully in mk8

Having great fun in my Up GTi , great slick manual box . Youthful experience, great to wind back the clock in some respects. The Boxster is pretty good also. lol

Oh well something else to do.

Opened up my boot and water poured out the trims on the side, back into the boot area. Found the issue, seems it is really comon on all Golf mk7's.

Ordered a new grommet/pipe as my mates MK 7 GTD 2014 is doing exactly the same thing, so we will rip out our boot liners together no doubt.

Mine is still under warranty but cannot be bothered taking it back for this simple thing.

Very interesting Ben, never experienced this problem myself and neither have my friends who own R mk7.

Not apparent in my current R MK7.5 Estate.

So is it apparent in Hatches only or have Estate owners experienced similar?

Not sure, just when I googled tailgate water issues, lots of threads came up and this grommet/pipe thing comes up.

On looking at my car there is no grommet and the pipe is loose in the bottom of the tailgate, letting water fill my tailgate rather than exit out the hole via the grommet.

I never noticed a grommet on my previous R or the SV but it is there on all hatchbacks for sure.

Wish these YouTube people would get their fact right before blurting out inaccuracies .

Base model Golf R mk7 DSG approx. £34k  - v Base model RS3 he quotes is £44k.

Always interesting checking standard spec of each and what you get for your money.

Similarly the young woman BMW 140i

You can get a New built ready to go Golf R for Under £30,000, and a RS3 is going to be just £42,600.

Trust me ,if you have the 19" alloys, then you need to option DCC @ £855 to get the better ride capability/comfort.

Thank goodness the super uprated sports exhausts is not an option on the Estate. That's saved a few quid.

& don't bother with the expense of the "PP" brakes...they have only painted the callipers silver & fitted the CSS discs & pads....& those discs are rubbish as they have problems due to the internal vanes rotating the wrong way on one side as both discs are from the same blank.....VW cheapskates...

There was an article in VW driver about this problem......much cheaper & better to get some Vagbremtechnic "J" hook two piece discs...

My Golf R has now been traded in for a 7.5 Golf gtd dsg,due to with only 29k on the clock & the clutch started slipping & a notchy gear change on 1st to 2nd which spoilt the driving experience for me,but the main reasons for changing was having to put a tank of fuel in it a week & two attempts to steal it via following me/car jacking & my insurance renewal nearly doubled due to the amount of Golf R's getting stolen,im loving the dsg box in the gtd & would never have a manual Golf again now.

That's unlucky on all counts with your Rmk7 then. Especially with on 29k on the clock presumably out of warranty? What sort of use, city driving, stop /start or country / motorway commute?

Mixed driving, car was under warranty but vw class it as wear & tear, the clutch is a known weak point on the Golf R,sadly I only found this out after buying the car & joining the Golf R forum,a uprated clutch was going to be a grand fitted, the R has the same clutch as the Golf gti & is not up to the job, some owners have had the clutch fail at less than 9k miles.

Enjoy your GTD mk7.5 DSG. Bet You got yourself a good deal with VW shifting their Diesels.

Guess they will do a cheap fix on the R mk7 then get a good forecourt margin.

Obviously you will potentially kiss goodbye to your warranty but I can whole heartedly recommend a Revo stage 1 map for that engine.  I found MPG actually went up, no issues in 3 years (not even a trouble code via a scan) but what you have is a car with enough mid-range clout to make you forget about the R.
