A little hardcore might have been nice, back in the day..........

As for bikes, I got my bike licence in '64, but never really enjoyed getting wet, & falling-off would hurt even more now....

SWMBO & I are both Ford pensioners & really can't find anything in the Ford range that we want to own / drive.... even the sensible cars that are aimed at OAPs.

Horses & courses, applies, as always, bue we just can't find something that we like for £32k 'ish.

One other point, a Golf, in a "sensible" colour can be quick & fun, but it doesn't need to shout about it.

Horses for courses it is i think mate.

If everybody liked the same thing we’d all drive the same stuff. Its all mixed up though.

N yeah it could be a sleeper if it wasnt for those 4 tail pipes.

I quite like abit rowdy n abit of a handful though, that excites me. Maybe thats why i dont fit into keiths not so little (actually rather long :D ) thread

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

That isnt what i was saying at all. Youve taken that right out of context.

Nothing is beneath anybody.. everybodys on the same level on this earth whether theyve got 10 million in the bank or 100 quid.. a Hurrican or a Golf.

But feeling special in a motor is something that cant be described so easily.

I have tried actualy. It was much like a Golf but abit quicker. Good for what it is.. but just effortlessly quick and quiet. Nothing special.. just like a 150 golf with twice the power.. although perhaps doesnt feel it.

You just dont jump in one and smile and giggle or feel that special something. You jump in it like you jump in any golf. Same with with focus RS.

What a give away , you are that one in a million lovers of the Honda Type R FK 8 .look lol

Looks like a wet and miserable Woodhead Pass.

It's alright all of that... but does it do that one thing that you cant really describe, does it make you feel special?

Thats the thing really, for me... at the end of the day it's just a Golf. You don't really jump in a Golf and feel special.

The next stage tune development but it's only a Golf .

He’d get overtaken by a Panda 4x4 when the going gets tough anyway.

A "Knob", really?

FWIW, I thought that the driver seemed quite competent & was enjoying exploring the capabilities of his car.

I'd imagine that a Golf R on winter tyres would be useful car to have around, especially if driving in snow was common-place in your locality.

Wouldn't be going past in the 'fresh snow' on the dual carriageways myself. You never really know how other drivers are going to react, especially in the snow. Only takes one of them to change lines without realising where the centre line is, or moving over without looking and he's left with nowhere. Nobodys really expecting it and alot of drivers are panicky and doing things unexpected in weather like that.

Although 4 motion helps him go, it isnt going to help him stop and those R wheels will be wider than most of the hatchbacks, so winters or not, that 1.0 corsa might be pulling up faster than he expects.

Be a much safer bet keeping his distance and dotting him off when they get stuck.

If he wants to see what his car will do, why not go and find somewhere quiet.. start properly testing the 4wd where nobodys about. Could have a proper play then.

Plenty of life in the old dog's new car compared to the old car planned?

Love the idea - more balls than me Arthur.

Nice little UK tuned makeover.

Residuals are the Manufacturer and Leasing Companies problem with cars like this where not many are 'Buying these when new with cash money'

So VW Group will know how much 'much cheapness' to offer them to Lease Companies for, and what 'Manufacturers Contribution' to offer etc

to get them out and about on the roads and not looking like a sales flop.

So the Deposit and monthly payment will maybe decide just how many there are First Registered,

then the 'Cupra' section of SEAT / VW Dealerships will have some Demonstrators being First Registered every quarter,

so 'Bargain' Used cars should be available ever 3 to 6 months, then 'Much Cheapness'   CUPRA,  Leon, Ibiza, Ateca & maybe Arona in another 2 years on.

Its the whole finance thing thats pushing vehicles prices up to begin with though.

All people are looking at is monthly costs, so the manufacturers push up prices, slowly.

Because theres not many people who will pay £30+ grand for a Golf in cash, which will lose a massive chunk in 3 years.

So more new cars leased, then stuck with loads of cars which are a few years old.

I really have not looked at 'Asking Prices' but how much are Main Dealers asking for the first 'Cheap Leased' Golf R's that are now being returned into Trade

as the 18 Plate are about to start being First Registered.

I guess that VW Dealers have high Asking prices so that they do not look like Residual Disasters.

'We can not give you much of a discount, lets see what we can do with your Trade in's value, then we can punt it off to auction!'

Or some discount car supermarket chain we might have some 'partnership with'.

In many ways we aren't typical "R" customers, being Senior Citizens (therefore far too old to handle the power, appreciate the handling, etc.) & living on

our pensions rather than being paid salaries.

But....., although we might not want to buy a car on credit, ('cos we might not be deemed to be creditworthy) we don't need to 'cos there's cash in the bank, earning a pittance & burning holes in pockets.

When SWMBO's Golf was purchased the total discount (from a VW dealer) was approx. £9K, because the Golf estate was a VW UK "Target Car" at that time.

If I could be persuaded to buy a new petrol Passat, I could save app. £9K again, because it's the current "Target Car" & the dealer is allowed to use the £4K deposit contribution to discount a cash sale, why I don't know but the Passat isn't a big-selling car & residuals seem to be terrible.

(Don't worry, I'm keeping my sensible Superb instead, for when I get to old to drive a performance car...........)

Currently I've been offered a £5K discount on a new Golf R hatchback + a £1.5K deposit contribution if I wanted to take out a PCP, (which I probably would) but I'd cancel it during the 14-day cooling-off period.

Some VW dealers will discount, either through Carwow, etc. or if they want the business.

I have peeked at some of the ex-lease R's on Autotrader, not too expensive, but horribly basic cars, not really what I want to own.
