New Golf R - Part 2

Obviously you will potentially kiss goodbye to your warranty but I can whole heartedly recommend a Revo stage 1 map for that engine.  I found MPG actually went up, no issues in 3 years (not even a trouble code via a scan) but what you have is a car with enough mid-range clout to make you forget about the R.

I have considered it but as the car isnt a year old yet & is dsg i will leave it as standard as the warranty is important to me,im very impressed with the gtd to be fair,i dont miss the R as much as i thought i would, yes the grip was better & the outright acceleration of the R was good but the gtd has plenty of power when needed & im enjoying 50+ mpg instead of 30 mpg. (i saw 63 mpg on a long run recently & that wasnt in eco mode or driving like a old man, best i ever got in the R was 36 mpg & that was driving like a old man in eco).

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

Great to see new owners getting the same buzz that I had when owning my 1st Rmk7 -mk7.5 ………

One of these absolutely obliterated me last night. It flew past me so fast it felt like I wasn't even moving! My car is no slouch but that was something else. Had weird indicators too. Rather than the standard blink or the more recent inside to out pattern this alternately flashed the boot mounted indicator then the outer bodywork one. Looked weird to me.

VCDS tweaks...might be the "pace lights"..or the Kencha? coding..various different VCDS coding can & has been done..

Must have been tuned....Start putting DSG & stage 1 or two tunes & they fly...some of the 1/4mile times are fast..

It was dsg. Could hear the changes with pops on the exhaust. Made me want one. Then remembered it is just a vw. I was in the jaaaaag.

Thanks for posting Keith, I'd never want to buy his car, his driving style isn't really suited to a brand new car.

+ If you choose DSG, why drive it in manual mode?

Because the DSG in auto mode really does balls up & thinks it knows which gear you should be in...& most of the time if you want to drive a twisty road it gets it wrong...& it won't hold the gears much & changes up early...

& if you really want the estate version its DSG only..VW do not make a manual version due to "marketing"..there is no mechanical reason why not...same as most Audi S & RS in the avants..all DSG..so no choice...

That's fine in the hatch but no manual option in the R estate & Audi version avants...

Yep, I appreciate that, having owned both. I agree with you in the short coming of the DSG, even in mk7.5 7 speed form. I would have chosen manual if it had been available for my Estate. However, I still get fun and enjoyment out of the DSG, just not as much around my Wiltshire twisty stuff .

DSG is an Automated Manual so perfect for those wanting to do a bit of gear changing and there is just 2 pedals there.

Plenty would not want a manual but enjoy driving and like to select the gear they want going into or out of corners.

George, it will always be each to their own.

& those that do not want an Hot Estate with AWD & DSG might just have to go with a an Audi or SEAT if VW are not offering them,

or for a big thing like a Skoda Superb with less go than the class bellow in size.

Skoda not allowed to do small or medium sized Hot estates or hatches with AWD be it DSG or Manual.

Audi, VW & Seat don't do manual 4x4 estates..& haven't for awhile...all s-tronic or tiptronic or DSG badged....& that's RS versions also...

there is NO mechanical reason...all "marketing"....

"Balls-up"? No way Jose!

We've owned 5 DSG cars so far, & are running 3 at this time. If the car has paddles (& they all did, including my old Superb) all you need to do is shift up/down when you think fit,

only using the shifter in manual mode to hold the gear you've selected.

Taking a hand off the wheel ( & pumping a 3rd pedal) to shift gears is so last century.......

As for driving twisty roads, there's enough torque in the EA888 lump to make decent progress without having to shift all the time,..

I'm not against manuals, I've owned quite a few & enjoyed some , including a vRS Octy, but I'm happy to let the DSG work for me unless / until I want or need to play .

But it's only my (& SWMBO's) opinion, based on 50+ years (each) of driving & probably 1 million miles between us.

It's not just the R estate, etc, the Cupra Ateca is 7-speed DSG only, probably 'cos there's no market for a manual / or the cost of testing  / certifying said manual box.

Don't Skoda still sell a diesel vRS Octy estate with AWD?

The quick Superb Estates (276 / 280) are AWD & DSG only, they may indeed bellow but they're not lacking in performance.

Barges, taxi / private hire car / airport transport / family car sized whales and sales rep mobiles.

As sporting as the vRS / RS badge and decals and red calipers.  Tarted up rather than actually tuned up.

If Skoda are going to have a Mk3 Octavia Estate vRS with WLTP approval and Haldex and DSG then there will be buyers or those leasing.

Now they offer is the Scout or L&K 2.0 TDI DSG AWD 150ps, and that will do all it needs to do and go double the UK NSL.

Aspired to be owned by young thrusting driving gods, unlikely!

Skoda 'Marketing'.The  'Motorsport Heritage & Success and Rallying success, and then offer something that can carry 5 people and a fridge,

or a vRS Kodiak with a B-Turbo diesel that can carry 7 people and go around the Nurbugring carrying 2 slower than a driver can do it in a Van.

A bit of computer / software work & artistic licence in the bottom vid...

I live next to the best drivers roads in the UK..my local roads are twisty & I love "driving"...DSG in auto mode is absolutely horrid for me...& yes the current one are better than the older versions...so for me a DSG box would be in "manual" mode all the time..

Which then brings up the earlier question that was raised..."why not buy a manual version & save money & weight".....to which the reply still stands as I stated above that "4x4 estates are not made by VAG with manual gearboxes"...

Its not to do with testing etc as for the MK3 Octavia the car is the same length, body shell platform..only difference is the roof line...in the Golf the hatch/estate diff is just the rear 1ft after the rear axle...&.....& the gearbox difference is only in the engine bay & gear shift surround & steering wheel..& that's all the same for hatch/estate....

Its all marketing...in USA you can get MK7 Golf petrol 4x4 estates without "R" big engine & without jacked up "alltrack"...so basically a normal looking estate with a 1.8lt TSI engine (similar to the engine in the  early MK3 Octavia 1.8lt L&K) & 4x4...….all marketing....

I almost bought "R", as I had seen pictures of it testing at the 'ring...& that was before it was officially launched...but after some digging found it was DSG only...no thanks...even after & had bought mine I saw a crashed "R" hatch with the chassis intact & the engine ok...just someone had taken a baseball bat to all the body panels.....basically a straight swap of mechanics to my car as the bodyshell on estate is the same for 2wd & awd…& the hatch & estate are the same dimensions for the platform wheelbase to wheelbase...just would require new awd estate fuel tank & exhaust...

Not an easy job but within my skills/equipment & I have a nice big double garage....decided against it due to health & other problems...

Just as well there are lots of other manufacturers that still do AWD, 4x4 or part time AWD with manual boxes then for those that want that.

Hatch, Estate, SUV or whatever.

Or for those that are near the 'best driving roads'  a FWD petrol turbo with a manual box.

beez neez,

just half the the power of those hopeless haldex &  automated manual 'hot hatch / estates and go all the same places at much the same speed.

I've no idea where you live, but if all your local roads are both "twisty & driving", maybe you don't have to many hedges & blind bends / corners , late-for-work commuters, school-buses & (other) doddery old fools getting in your way........

In this corner of Essex, all the roads are busy, the 2-lane country roads have restrictive speed limits &/or subsidence ( dry summer & clay soil = cracked & sunken tarmac...)

& driving is necessary but not terribly pleasant.

For us, any automatic is prefered just to cut down the workload & the DSG's can provide fun when we can find somewhere to play.

Not this time of year though, too much oncoming traffic & unlit roads = no desire to drive for fun.

I'm sure that there are "fun-roads" elsewhere in the UK, probably without hedges, above the tree line & with good sighting but too far away from here to visit.

Driving in Germany ,the Ardennes & even Luxembourg can be fun though, probably closer to home, but difficult to visit in the near future....

Oh yes, the Mk 3 Octy  & Golf 7 estate are both MQB based, but don't share the same dimensions. I've done some research for a friend & the Octy is longer & wider, with much more space inside, but narrower over the mirrors.

SWMBO owns a Golf Wagon, & very nice it is, but my Superb is easier to park, (width over the mirrors again) & has MUCH more interior space, but it is about 400 mm longer.

If the vRS Octy was available with 280 / 300 ps, AWD, DSG & a decent quality interior I might ditch the Soop, but since VW control Skoda, I'm hanging on to the old girl.....
