I knew that any plus £40k list price car is subject to £320 luxury car tax, as you mentioned. So it wouldn’t of been a surprise or a deal breaker but around £20k loss from new, in 2 years is pretty frightening.

Trouble is the 272 is a 4 cylinder with no noise 😞

The search continues. Been offered a really nice well looked after 2006 Focus ST3 with factory fitted mountune kit, for sensible money, now that makes a nice noise; just shame about the slightly chavvy looks IMO.

It took Ford quite a while to get the Volvo lump to sound exciting.  IIRC it actually held up development...

Unfortunately the Golf R is only a 2014 derivative and the BMW 135i is totally new having been developed over the last 2 years.

Role on R MK8 Plus 2020/21.

Golf still has the better 5,000rpm plus response which helps when tuning over the flat Kia Ceed looking BMW.

@vrskeith do you still have your Golf R 7.5?  If so, how are you finding it?  Would you recommend one?  Any problems that I should be aware of?

I *might* be about to put a deposit on a 7.5 R Estate.  Looking at the 310ps, pre-WLTP variant and being the estate ...a DSG.

One of my biggest concerns was the insurance premiums but I'm a little surprised to find that it's actually cheaper vs. my current Superb280.

Any advice much appreciated.

My Golf R mk 7 /mk 7.5 history:

Bought my first R mk7 in March 2014- 3dr manual in Lapis blue ( signature colour from launch) kept it for 2 years ,covering 30,000 miles. Never missed a beat in my ownership. Never had any of issues mentioned in owners website, such as clutch problems, blown turbo or water pump problem.

Traded it in for an R mk7 Estate in Lapis blue a very low mileage dealership boss's car, reason for business and personal reasons. So my experience of the DSG, as no manual option. My life the Estate was brilliant for the reason I bought it room and similar performance and handling to my hatch experience. Again car never missed a beat in 25,000 miles and no issues in 18months. Traded it in for a Porsche Boxster 981.which I still have. However, after 6months bought another Golf R mk7 manual top spec car 5dr.Bought from VW Bolton on a great deal as dealership managers very low mileage car . 9months later and 15000 miles later I was tempted into a 17 plate Very top spec R mk7.5 Estate, in Indium  grey , a  dealership friend of mines car with a great trade-in, Needed the space for business use. So put 30000 miles on it again FSH and never any issues.

I currently have a 19 plate UP GTi and more recently sought out a Golf R mk7.5 5dr in indium grey, last of the manuals , low mileage one owner car in top condition in a very good spec.

So from the aforementioned, you will see that I am a huge R fan both in manual and DSG forms.

So in conclusion go for it,you can still have a great fun experience ,driving and living with  the R mk 7.5 Estate👍

Hope that helps. Enjoy should you proceed with you purchase.

F

For your interest ,I respect this guy Andrew runs his own usedcar business, specialist in VW Golf GTi but a good knowledge .

For got to say if you have 19"alloys ,then would l recommend having the R with DCC

That’s a great, helpful response and I appreciate you taking the time.

I’m looking at an Indium grey 2 year old car with 1 previous, private owner. Unfortunately no options ticked but the 7.5 estate is fairly well spec’d as standard. Though it’s hard to get some accurate info on what packs/kit are standard on the 7.5/estate. The only options I think I’ll miss are the heated screen and upgraded sound system. My local Indy specialist is prep’ing a quote for retrofitting a rear view camera. Dealer has quoted £725+VAT, which I understand to be a little high.

If I was in the market for a 5dr hatch then there’s a lot more availability, with more options ticked.

Watch this space, I’m just waiting for the dealer to come back to me with a price for my car and I’ll take it from there.

Edit: just seen your update. This particular car has R18 Cadiz wheels though I will look at getting some Prets in future as I think they are much nicer but will likely stay with R18’s

I'm sure you can push a Good deal out of them ,especially as it's not far off month end. They need their target hit right now . Dealership under pressure play hard ball as best you can. Best of luck.

Thanks. Yes, agreed. I’ve already made a comment along the lines of “I’m sure you want to do a good deal and get another unit sold before the UK is put on lockdown” and as you say; new reg month, excess used stock and month end. Hopefully all in my favour.

Sadly, I am not.  The plan for today was for the dealer to prep the car this morning for handover early a'noon.  The camera and new tyres were both fitted yesterday, with the service carried out on Saturday morning.  Like other businesses the dealership will be closed for at least the next 3 weeks and as my car wasn't ready to be collected/delivered first thing this morning it will now just have to be put on hold.

Given the circumstances I'm actually surprised the dealer managed to get the camera/tyres in stock and fitted by yesterday, seeing as I only paid a deposit on Friday a'noon.  Dealer has been great though; I've been getting email updates on the progress of the car and even got a courtesy email yesterday to say we were on for collection as planned, despite salesperson being on their day off.  I've been really impressed with the service.  I bought my Passat CC from the same dealer nearly 10 years ago and they were great on that occasion too.

A bit miffed as it's always exciting to get a new car but given the circumstances I really can't and won't complain.  I'll enjoy it all the more when the time comes.

Golf R mk8 arriving in late 2020. Maybe the R Plus in 2021

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2020-volkswagen-golf-r-unwrapped-nurburgring-tests

2020 Volkswagen Golf R prototype at Nurburgring

As my Superb has all the MK7 Golf R hardware a simple remap would give the Plus version a minimum of 360bhp even with the mandatory GPF fitted. Already confirmed 328bhp for the standard Mk8 Golf R.

I'm still not sold on the Mk8 looks in general.  The R's revised headlights and grille don't do much to rescue it either IMO.  The GTI on the other hand doesn't look too bad, though I don't know how they got away with using the Renault sport fog lights.
