New Golf R - Part 2

I'm still not sold on the Mk8 looks in general.  The R's revised headlights and grille don't do much to rescue it either IMO.  The GTI on the other hand doesn't look too bad, though I don't know how they got away with using the Renault sport fog lights.

Would like to see it in the flesh, with some sexy metallic  colours . Really liking the Porsche  Green currently on the Macan.. Lapis blue is still great after 6 years.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

It will be interesting to see what colours are available in the UK.  I've realised from looking at many many many (!) R reviews over the last few weeks that the North American and Canadian markets have some great colours available; some are a bit too garish for my taste but the point being that they have considerably more choice than we do.

I think Lapis blue is the only colour that suits all 3 of the R body shapes. It also looks good with either all black wheels/mirror caps or the silver wheels/mirror caps.  As you say, it has aged well too

Well all I can say is the BMW that went past sounded 300 times better than what I could hear of the Golf.

So is this the MK8?

If so what an absolute let down...😩

You mean when the driver in the R had already signal to the guy in the BMW that he was letting him through and hence taken his foot of the throttle while the BMW was at full chat. I wouldn't be fouled by what you just hear or indeed saw. As you know noise is not everything. Probably Good for the BMW that it was nice and dry. However , Ben do you know the spec /model of the Beemer.?Also probably costing at least twice as much in real life.

Ben,

I wonder if it was one of these testing and typically sounding out VW's offering in the M135i class.

Or was it this?

It looked more like an M5 size wise with 600+bhp and 4WD.

All I meant was, I watched the whole video and couldn’t hear the Golf other than the normal thwarted 4 cylinder usual noise  in amongst the squealing tyres but the BMW certainly sounded a much nicer deep straight 6 sorta noise as it went past and then changed gear.

I fully understood the Golf indicated to let him know to pass etc 👍

Just love this video and the guy's expression.

£49,675 Golf or a V8 Supercar? Interesting article that even surprised the respected writer.

Very interesting, I wonder how much excess weight the car was carrying.....

'T was a pity they didn't extend the car beyond 3rd gear, but they're probably all drag strip racers at heart...........

For us, we feel that an R is also a very good motorway car, reasonably quiet at sensible cruising speeds & quick enough

to overtake slow-moving traffic when required.

I'd be happy to own a (petrol) 4WD vRS Octy as well, but that's probably never going to be available, especially in the UK.

Thanks Keith, DC.

As well to be in this thread.......

They seem to have the driving dynamics sorted, however the quality of the interior is shocking compared to my similar priced Superb 272 hatch.😉

The interior quality has always been NBG when compared with the Mk. 7 Golf &/or my ancient Superb 2. But, if you enjoy a chuckle, take a peek at the T-ROC Convertible if you happen to be a near a VW dealer in the near future. It makes our old VW Eos tin-tops seem luxurious.....

The Cupra Ateca has a much better interior + a decent amount of space. (Pity about the copper accents though.)  Pity Skoda can't / won't build a vRS Karoq to compete with the Ateca, (which is almost the same car & is assembled by Skoda.......).

Hey! :tongueout:

So if you want a big Petrol Skoda Hatch or estate with 272 ps, DSG & Haldex about £32,000 will get a new one.

The 300ps VW T-Roc R will be around £35,000 and a Cupra Ateca £33,000

So Superb is in a different size class than the Golf R, T-Roc or Ateca really as many looking to pay 30 grand plus can clearly see.

The size difference and handling being much more than the difference between Oooo & Ahhhhh.

Sorry, but I really think that the copper coloured shapes (badges?) are a waste of money. But, I also think that trying to create "Cupra" as a standalone brand isn't such a great idea either.

They can share platforms, be tested around the world and the Nurburgring but that does not mean that they are all equal.

It does not make a Superb Estate an Audi A6 Avant.   Or maybe it does.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/481129-moose-test-superb-iv

Since when did the A6 Avant share a platform with a Mk. 3 Superb?

Hint, the Superb uses the MQB platform, for transverse engined vehicles, whereas the current A6 uses the MLB platform, (as does the current A4, etc.) for longitudinal engine cars.

Different cars, aimed at different markets, Skoda buyers like a bargain, whereas Audi owners like to show-off their wealth.

Which is why my daily is still an ancient Superb, & my "fun" car is a Golf R, rather than an Audi S3.......

Have a good day, DC.

Sorry i mean generally share platforms across VW Brands as pointed out with a RS3 compared to a Superb or Golf R.

Exactly different cars aimed at different markets or buyers.  Not seen many RS 3 or Cupra Ateca as Taxis or Airport Transport so far.

Audi drivers can be gadgies from a scheme on benefits or the grip or just hard workers and are trying to hide their wealth by merging in with others in their S3 or RS3.
