Are K&N Air filters worth the money

Featured Replies

As title really?

Ive read they add extra BHP (only slightly) and give the engine a nicer sound, But are they worth the extra £?

Air filters is a big myth with regards to the BHP they add to your engine.

Anyways for me it is all about the sound and the looks especially when you are stock.

They do give the engine a 'slightly' throatier sound and you can hear the turbo spooling a little better too. I bought a generic cone filter from Autosave for £12 and it did the exact same job as a K&N branded one.

NO!

NO!

I have one and have to agree not worth it

panel filter might be. bit dearer but then, clean it every 50,000 miles and it means you don't have to keep replacing it at further cost.

The only advantage over a OEM filter is that the K&N does not fall apart when it gets wet, but you do not want wet in your airbox anyway.

Buy the time they get to 50,000 miles and you are going to clean and retreat you are usually wasting fuel anyway.

A fresh new filter every 20,000 - 30,000 miles is only under £20 anyway and the engine breaths well.

I clean mine at every service basically because I can and for no other reason, also I should mention it not a cone just the k&n version of the standard filter. I have the cleaner and oil due to having a rallycross car and loads of cone filters for it

OK then, but what about this K&N set up that includes the bottom air box,

K&N Filters Performance Intake Kit 57S-9505

No they don't in general considering the performance gain (which is none) to cost ratio.

As I said it is all about the looks and the sound.

The OP asked about a K&N filter and i see he has a Fabia Monte Carlo Tech

but no idea if a 1.2TSI or 1.6TDI CR.

1.2TSI

As far as I know Tdi or Tsi doesn't matter still a round filter 6R0129620A from memory

Exactly,   in does not matter with the standard 1.2 TSI if you fit the K&N & keep it in while it stays clean..

More noise is about all you get. If it sucks more air at a different temperature the Sensors & ECU (Software) has it performing pretty

much the same.

Unless you get the car remapped but to be honest it won't make much of a difference then either

Won't add any power. End of ;-)

True.

But are they worth the money?

I've not had one in a car before, but on a bike they cost a little more than the OEM air filters, but they can be cleaned out properly at a service. Where as with the OEM one you have to throw it and replace. So saving money on the long run.

Depends on why you are buying it I suppose. I've never kept a car long enough to worry about what filter is in it lol! ;-)

I guess bikes service intervals generally arent as long either. Usually 5k or so. Cars are 10k or more arent they.

Thinking about it, that maybe makes my point irrelevant :D

...Personally, in my Fab, I got a Bosch one quite cheap at euro car parts anyway. As mentioned earlier by some smarty pants, change often and it'll breathe well. I pay around half his quote though and change it at no more then 20,000m.

Lol, £10 will be half of £20 then and £16 will be under £20 and you don't need to be smart to work that out.
