Help - Octavia blower issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

First off, I know nothing about cars, so your help is very much appreciated!  I'll run through the full story start to finish.

I own a 2011 1.6 petrol Octavia.  About 6 months ago the blower stopped working on the first 3 settings, but worked Ok on 4.  It was summer and it wasn't really needed so I didn't worry too much.  Eventually everything died.

So I took the car to my local garage.  The informed me that the resistor had blown (makes sense really) and that the blower itself was a bit 'sticky'.  They replaced the resistor and greased up the blower so it would run a little more smoothly.  This fixed the issue for about 10 minutes.  Again, first the 1,2,3 went, then the whole thing.

So I took it back, same garage told me that I need a new blower.  So replaced the blower completely.  Same thing only this time I was saved for about 20 minutes.  Took it back again, where they replaced the filters which were black with dust etc.  Same again.

At this point the local garage advised I go back to the dealer.  I rang them.  They told  me they would charge me 80 quid just to open the bonnet and if any of the replacement parts were 2nd hand they wouldn't touch the car.

I bought the car from Trust Ford rather than Skoda and it was due a service anyway so I left it up with them and asked them to take a look.  They are telling me that the only possibility is that the new motor for the blower that the local garage installed  must be faulty.  Local garage should have warranty and replace part for free.

Local garage telling me that they believe something else must be faulty which is causing the resistor in the motor to blow.  If I want a new part, even though it is under warranty I'll have to pay for a new one whilst the 'faulty' part is investigated, if it's found to be OK I'll have to pay for two.  Which would be made even worse if it is something else and the new motor blows also.

My basic question.  Is there anything else that could be causing this other than the motor?  Should I get the electrics in the car checked out before getting the new motor?  I've got two garages with different supposed root causes.

No idea if this has anything to do with it, but sometime the bonnet open light is very dimly lit on the car for no reason and from time to time when I press the central locking all the windows open slightly (I've no idea if this is a problem or a feature in the car for warm days as it only seems to happen when I press the button multiple times - really showing my lack of knowledge here!)

Sorry for the long post, your help is very very much appreciated before I spend any more money on this!

As for the dim dash light, this again is a common issue on the Octavia, see here...

I have had the same issue with the windows dropping a few centimeters when the car is unlocked using the remote. Resetting the autoclose feature and trap prevention system worked for me...

1) Turn on the ignition.

2) Lower all four (or two if you have manual rear windows) all the way.

3) Lift all four buttons up to wind the windows up.

4) When the windows are completely closed keep the buttons lifted and count for 5 seconds.

5) Release the buttons and turn off the ignition.

This should reset the auto close feature.

The auto close feature is where you unlock the car using the remote but keep the button held down, after a few seconds all four windows (and sunroof if fitted) open. Ideal for cooling the car down on a hot day as you approach it. Locking the car and holding the lock button results in the windows closing too.

Be careful though if you keep the keys in your pocket, if you inadvertently sit on them in the house and press the button the windows will drop without you realising, usually when its raining!

Welcome to Briskoda  B)

It is the resistor pack, a relatively common failure. Not a big job...

Firstly many thanks for your help.

My online searches led me to think this.  I believe the resistor pack was replaced twice though, once initially and then a second time along with the blower itself.  Yet it still failed.

Would this lead you to think it might be electronics or something causing the resistor to blow each time?

I'll give that a go, thanks again!

Ah, I'd missed that the resistor had already been replaced. Very odd.

It might need an auto-electrician rather than a normal garage then?

Yeh I think that's my next port of call, either the dealer or an auto-electrician.

Was hoping maybe there might be something that the garage might not have thought of, but it seems they covered everything.
