Get that plate changed though unless its a show plate I got pulled for mine when I first had it, luckily the cops were quite sound.

Unfortunately that's one of those grey areas where the coppers decision is as consistent as British weather...

I've been pulled over and ticketed for not having my sidelights on 3 minutes after the official "lighting up time" (sun down) in a naturally well lit area because I pulled out a bit quick on a panda car and was in a bit of an arsey mood that day...

From a legal point of view isn't there a "specification" that it must adhere to?

Sidelights are not for driving though.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/general-rules-techniques-and-advice-for-all-drivers-and-riders-103-to-158 - rule 113, you don't need headlights on at night if there is street lighting, only side lights. Everyone does though, as they follow #115 "should" recommendation...

Yes their is its has to be within certain specification aka letter height, character width etc. You will be able to find out online unfortunately I haven't got time. The law will stay the same but yes coppers will often use there own discretion but not so much traffic cops usually they are jobs worths who stick to the letter of the law.
