Door armrest problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I guess this is a common problem?

Where I rest my elbow on the door sill, over the years it has dented and a small blister appeared. This now has about a 1cm split in it which will gradually get worse.

Have any of you tries fixing this yourself? I have thought of trying to inject some sort of glue or resin into it to reinforce it? Can't imagine it's economical to replace the whole part.

Any thoughts appreciated,

Russell

The door as such does not have an armrest, so you are resting your elbow where proper support hasn't been designed in, which has caused the damage.  I'd replace the door trim and stop resting my elbow on the door.

do you mean the top of the door card?
My octavia has a small dent there caused by a previous owner using it as an arm rest.

They only place to rest your arm is the bit with the window switches

I realise it's not designed for leaning on but old habits die hard and all that, any ideas how much they are?

Sorry, yes not the proper arm rest, poor choice of words, as you say, the top of the door card next to the window

Bargain :D

Bargain :D

definetly lol

I suppose you have three options;

Live with it as is

Repair with some kind of resin etc

Replace the door card

If you want to replace then probably best to find one from a scrap yard on ebay or something.

I rest my arm on the lower part (where the windows switches are) when pootling along the motorway and my other arm on the arm rest. It's just right for holding the bottom of the wheel.

I rest my arm on the upper bit of door trim which leaves a dent, but it always seems to go back to normal after a while. I should probably stop doing this based on this topic!

Hmmm, my door card has a dent where I do exactly the same thing.......guess I better stop it now.......

I find the arm rest with the switches on it too low for me, at least I've warned some of you, bet you can't stop though

thanks for the replies

My card doesn't have a dent so much as a bubble as the material has come away.

That would be reasonably easy to resolve, if you so desire.

Cut a small neat slot in the cloth, as inconspicuously as possible, and smear some (probably contact) adhesive in with a flat implement. Allow to almost dry, and press back together.

The only future concern would be if sat in direct sunlight, the glue may soften, but it would be a good resolve for when you come to sell the vehicle.

My though was rather than a cut I'd get a needle and syringe and inject some glue into it then keep it depressed while the glue sets, if it came off again it's no big deal as the holes should close up.

I have the smallest impression as I only learned about the issue from this place. I then trained myself to rest my arm near the switches. There is a small bulge now, but not much that anyone else can see it.

I would go down the breakers route if you feel you need to change it.
