VRS TSI Oil Consumption

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I know these TSI engines are known for their thirst of oil, however in 6500 miles of ownership (car now on 63k), I've topped up just over 1.75 litres of oil (Castrol Edge 5w-30). Does this consumption rate seem excessive? What level of consumption are others seeing with their TSIs?

Thanks

I think I only put a litre in between oil changes for the first three years (and 30K miles) of ownership . I reckon after five years it now needs about a litre every 10K.

Mine uses about 1ltr per 2k miles. According to all posts, yours is certainly not excessive.

I've put in somewhere between 1.5  and 20 litres between services...car now has 55 K miles on it, so coming up for it's 4th service......mostly getting about 13-14K between services

Mine does 1ltr per around 2.5-3k

Don't have to put a drop in mine between annual services !

Out of interest, how did you run the car in from new?

With mine I drove steadily (slowly) until it was all warmed up and then drove it pretty hard from day 1... Mine never used a drop of oil either.

However, im on a recon engine now (tensioner failed) and that does seem to like a tad of oil every now and again.

Same here, similar vintage. Mine's petrol.......

This is what I've done with all my cars for years. My Trophy has never needed a top up between oil changes. Better seal for the rings is the theory...

Thanks for the input all, seems I'm not alone with the consumption rate then! Just topped it up with another quart tonight because the oil warning light came on again. Never owned anything that goes through oil like this!

Are you putting in 2 pints at a time, and is this from a 1 Litre bottle?

How many miles are you doing between putting in 2 pints?

Are you sure where the correct quantity of Oil is on your dipstick when doing a cold dip and getting the correct amount in.

Do you do a check at Operating Temperature as well.?

If you are even using anything near 0.5 Litres in 621 miles (1000 km) then get onto Skoda UK Customer Services

and see about them paying for an official Oil Consumption test.

New Oil and filter, Oil weighed (857 grams a Litre).

Mileage covered, oil dropped and weighed,  see if you have another of the faulty engines.

I thought it was the TFSI that was known to be thirsty and the TSI not?

I've had the car in my signature from new, so almost 5 years and I've only had to top-up the oil once between variable services.

Hi, no sorry not 2 pints (just looked up what a quart actually is!) I meant a quarter of the bottle, which is a 1 litre top up bottle. This quarter of a litr seems to last around 600-800 miles before putting me back to the min mark on the dipstick and bringing the oil warning light on. Only checked when cold and on a level surface, not at operating temp.

Currently on 2 litres topped up over the past 6500 miles so not near 0.5 litre per KM. Judging by some of the other posts, it seems I'm not the only one and by no means is mine the worst oil consumer, but then some like Stoofa report next to no consumption at all. I do have the Skoda warranty though, so I'm still tempted to phone my dealer and see what they say. They were quite helpful with my previous warranty claim which resulted in a new clutch fully paid for.

Well 1 litre for 800 miles or 0.5 litre for 400 miles is not acceptable to man or beast or even Skoda, VW, Seat or Audi.

So if that is the oil usage you had best have a 'Official Oil Consumption Test, carried out.

Not 300km (186 miles) tell them you want to cover at least 600 miles, even 1,200 miles and they can seal the Filler Cap

and dipstick.

..................

Confused,

How do you get 2 litres in 6,500 miles,

then say 1 litre needed in 600-800 miles?

Is this the now increasing oil consumption?

..............

DOH<

Sorry, are you saying 1/4 of a litre ,  ie 250ml in 600-800 miles ?

Right forget all the other rubbish i typed.

Crazy Americans, but at least it tells you how to do it as in the Owners Manual,

unlike the VW UK Official Vid.

Yes, sorry was probably the way I wrote it (it's been a long day!) ... 250ml per 600-800miles, which has equated to 2 litres in 6500 miles.

Crazy Americans indeed! It suggests to call your local dealer and not drive any further if your oil warning light comes on!

Mine uses a fair bit of oil.

its quite funny, because i own a rotary car aswel, which are known for oil consumption.

And people always go.........oooh they use loads of oil..............erm not as much as my Skoda actually ;)

  • 3 months later...

Hi

My car is definitely using a lot of oil. Had the the low oil light on twice in the last couple of weeks. The level was just below or on minimum, and put about 200ml in to get it halfway up the min-max. Two weeks and only about 200 miles later, it's back on again.

My car is out of warranty; will o have to pay skoda for the oil usage test, and am I looking get new pistons? There has been no oil on the ground since fixing my leaking sump pan, and the warm engine bay stinks of oil,but I can't find D any drips...

Forgot to add that it's the low level light, not the low pressure light.  The manual states that if no oil has been added but the bonnet was opened for >30s (to turn off the light), the light will automatically come back on after 100km.  Perhaps I didn't put enough oil in (~100mls first time)?

I'm monitoring and recording oil usage and I've noticed that the level seems to drop off quickly - I dont think its linear. If you put 0.5L in, it is more than 2x longer until the light comes on than if you put 0.25L in.

I think I've got the hang of reading the terrible dipstick now, so will put 1L in next time and measure it properly.

Yeah same. I've made sure the oil level is perfectly on the max line and have taken note of the mileage.

How much in ml does it take to go from min to max?

Its 1L (1000ml) max to min I believe.

Cheers, that's what I thought it was.
