Hi

I have a Yeti 1.2 DSG 63 pre face lift.

As an extra I had a heated front screen fitted by Skoda when ordered from new.

My problem is some of the elements in the screen have stopped working leaving approximately  4 x 1 inch channels of uncleared ice.

I have checked the screen thoroughly and there seems to be no surface damage.

As my 3 year warranty will be up later this year are faulty heated windscreens covered by this or do I need to go the insurance route.

Second question my son recently borrowed the car and moaned about constant wheel spin.  I have done 30+ thousand mile but not being so heavy with my right foot it has not bothered me much.

It is very easy to get wheel spin with the Yeti DSG I have adjusted my driving.  Had various automatics before and wheel spin was piratically impossible. (Nissan Vauxhall,Fords)

Took it out on a very wet day a yep get it up to 10 miles an hour put your foot down and wheel spin and a warning light flashes is this common.

My tires are in good condition having done about 6 thousand miles since replaced

Contact your dealer about the windscreen and be firm.

Many petrol car drivers get wheelspin on diesels because

the power comes in at such low revs but any "new to their

experience vehicle" could be induced to spin its wheels.

+1

yes definitely faulty windscreen, might not be covered by warranty as they could claim it is due to damage...

my Yeti doesn't wheel spin as it 4 wheel drive so cant help on that, in my Fabia VRS its almost impossible not to in this weather!

The Warning light is telling you that the cars Traction Control is dealing with the wheel spin the driver induced as best as it can.

It tells you the tyres are losing traction and that is the Road, Tyre or Driver style of driving inducing the spin.

?

What type of tyres were fitted 6,000 miles ago and are the pressures checked and set for the use and conditions / Season / Weather / Temp.?

Firstly, it's a DSG so it is more like a manual 'box than an automatic of old.  In the olden days there would have been some slip through the torque converter at lower speeds which will have tempered wheelspin.  With a DSG, once you're moving the clutch is engaged and won't be slipped, hence more direct drive to the wheels.  Add in the high rate of torque increase that a turbocharged engine (especially a diesel) offers at low revs and you can promote wheelspin if pushed.

Next, I can wheelspin my 4x4 - most of the time most of the drive is through the front wheels - in fact it requires some wheelspin at the front before it fully engages the rear wheels.

Yes. I don't see this as a problem. One must spin the front wheels a tad to get the rear wheels working sufficiently.

Additionally the 1.2 TSi is a very light unit meaning that there's not much downward force (relatively speaking) pushing down on the front wheels, thus very easy to spin the wheels.

If there is no evidence of impact damage on the windscreen I would be pushing for a warranty replacement.

Have you actually measured the tread on the tyres? 30k miles, even in a 1.2 sounds about as much as you can expect. As soon as you go below 3mm of tread and available grip tails off quickly, particularly on a wet road as the tread can't shift water so well. Add in that summer tyres go hard and don't work so well below 7 degrees - and it is winter and colder of late probably explains the grip issue.

'6,000 miles since tyres replaced' it says.

OP has done 30,000 miles then Son with lead foot gets wheel spin.

Missed the 6k miles - I presume replacements are a reasonable make?

Yes you must get the screen done under warranty, they might say get it replaced under your insurance. so say no, the warranty will cover it.  I had my screen replaced no problems.

I had a vertical strip of 2'' from top to bottom that would not clear.

I also have a 1.2 Tsi DSG and, yes, you can induce wheel spin on certain surfaces if you accelerate hard, max torque is available from just 1,750 RPM with the 1.2 turbocharged engine. Just a matter of torque overcoming friction between road surface and tyres and it can happen with any car.

As you have found a normal experienced driver quickly learns to deal with it by more careful application of the right foot! Less experienced testosterone driven drivers sadly lack the skill to drive within their capabilities and therefore spin the wheels - and very often the car. The accident figurers for young male drivers are staggering, hence their sky high insurance rates.

What's this talk of diesels, the OP's car is petrol isn't it! :D

And even if it was diesel modern one's don't have anywhere near the low down grunt of old.

The lad was probably driving it in sport mode no doubt! :D

NOT going back to the original source means the manufacturer doesn't get the word that his product is not acceptable.

Like supermarkets, if you don't take it back, like they demand, they will assume there isn't a problem.

Had the screen replaced OK

Fell in love with the Fabia estate that I had for loan car.

I am picking up a Fabia SEL 1.2 DSG estate  later this week 4000 miles 65 plate in silver new sat nav being installed saving over 4.5 grand on list price.

Far more boot space than Yeti.

The garage gave me a very good trade in price

So I guess i will be heading over to the Fabia side from now on

Good luck to you all my little Yeti gave me almost 3 years of faultless driving but carting the dog and 2 grand kids around the Estate meets my needs better

Depends.

When pulling away from standstill, or accelerating reasonably hard, the rears are always engaged automatically without requiring the fronts to spin first.

Somewhere on here there's a link to the Haldex self-study guide; in there it describes the different scenarios when rears are pre-engaged.
