Child Car Seats

Featured Replies

Thinking about getting a new car seat for my 11 month old son as he's nearly outgrown his Mamas and Papas Zoom travel system (baby carrier using ISOFIX base). Problem is he's not quite at 9kg yet which seems to be the weight for the next level car seat, but length wise his legs are pushing against the seat, so wondering which car seat to go for. Anyone been in the same position? What car seats do/did you use for yours kids at this age?

We have an ERF Axkid Minikid on order from carseat.se - belt mounted as isofix limit is 18kg and we want to keep spud rear facing - this one is good to about 4yrs old.. passes that swedish test that gets a lot of clout around the review pages..

hasnt arrived yet though, as their stock order just before christmas didnt have the black one we wanted..

Should add, our lad is about to turn 1, and tall(long) also.. in his m&p isofix base seat.

The weights are somewhat a guideline though, based around averages. If hes able to sit up and hold his and all that, and is too tall/getting too tall for the infant carrier - the strap holes shudnt be more than an inches below shoulder level iirc on most seats..

We are on car seat number 3:P

-We had the seat/ pram system thing when he was new born

- then at 11months we got a Britax, thankfully we bought it second hand off my cousin so i knew it was involved in a actident. it was similar to this http://www.kiddicare.com/p/Britax_Eclipse_Car_Seat_Crown_Blue.htm. I would recommend this style over a more upright one, as they the angle can be altered, but they are more supportive for sleep on their little heads.

- he has now out grown this, and i bought http://www.halfords.com/kids-zone/car-seats/child-car-seats/joie-trillo-2-3-lx-inkwell-car-seat on black friday for £30 and its dam excellent, the girlfriend has a similar seat in her car that was 4x as expensive, but i hate the seatbelt set-up on it.

She's well out of it now but my little'un went into a Recaro kiddie seat. Couldn't tell you the model but it lasted her for years. It wasn't cheap but we only bought it once after she moved out of the baby seat. Top Quality stuff!

Another vote for recaro. Just made so well and last.

Looked at a lot of recaros too, except none of them show as compatible with the citigo...

the minikid weve ordered fits in a 106, and the back of a fiat 500.. ergo the citigo should be dine.

We had a recaro stage 0 and then we were given a britax stage 1. We knew the history of the Brittax so it was fine.

When he outgrew that we went back to Recaro.

We looked at quite a few car seats from mid budget right to very expensive ones. We thought the Recaro was the best irrespective of price. the materials it is made of (and the stage 0) were much better than the rest.

I think some of the others were easier to use but we're happy with the Recaro.

Plus if you've got a VRS it matches the seats :D

We had a young Profi -

Now were using the Recaro Monza Nova but without the pad for smaller kids (the IS version) -

Thanks for the replies. Looked at Recaro and trying to decide between the Young Sport Hero or the Monza Nova IS. It'll be going between 2 cars, my Monte estate with Isofix points, and SWMBO's Kia Picanto without Isofix points.

What are your opinions on rear facing seats? Was talking to a parent we know today and they said they read somewhere that they should be rear facing for as long as possible?

My first post - extendd rear facing is the way - the swedes are waaay out ahead on it. Check the recarro fits in the picanto i have a feeling its only passed for front seat.. also bear in mind weight limit on isofix is 18kg. Some scary videos of failures during crash tests...

We have Swedish rear facing seats - BeSafe Izi Plus in my Subaru and her Kia. I wouldn't think one would fit in a Citigo or other small car. Its ok in my Forester, but in her Ceed there isn't much front passenger leg room left. There's enough, but I wouldn't want to sit in it for hours on end.

However, I went for that decision as the safety of my child is worth more to me than a few quid saved and being able to stretch out in her car.

ISOFIX isn't really all that great, the previous seat we had wobbled more on its ISOFIX mountings than the BeSafe does (Its really well strapped in, with front anchors complementing the normal belt, doesn't move a mm in any direction) using the belts, plus as above, its not rated for anywhere near as much weight as an adult belt. Unless you're taking your seats out all the time, there is no drawback to using full belts.

Exactly.. if we are goung a distance we'd be bringin the octavia, rather than the go.

i read many many reviews etc before orsering up. Decided from the first day rear facing is safest therefore its what we are getting. If it means popping to inlaws or whatever ive ti jump in the back rather than up front so be it. But if some one said they got oyr one in a '500... well then the 'go should be at least the same...

I often wonder about modern kids seats,as when my kids were young ,the only kid car seat was Britax, and it came with anchorages to be fitted as a permanent fixture. e'g, on my Renault 4, I had to drill large holes in the boot, and fit straps ( with large washers) to hold restraining straps for the seat. Some of the ones for my GS, fitted and retained with the rear belts, seem to have a bit of movement, unless I fit the belt round the seat, and then force seat into the car cushions, to lock the car belts tightly.

Lok up the stats for incorrextly installed child seats.. including those done by "trained experts" its shocking how many arent done properly..
