*******s... Battery dead. So upgrading that didn't help.

is this what I should get next?

EDIT:

The rosstech page says once the software is updated to 178 (which it is) it needs to have certain things activated. Is this true and would this cause the battery drain? They only updated the software and left the default selections that were set for my car selected.

I would guess that one's a chinese one. I'd be looking for one made in Czech Republic personally. Certainly the pictures are not the one that's for sale as the part numbers differ. But it may be okay, just not EU spec. I don't know. He has a disclaimer in the advert which is kinda hard to decipher, so personally I wouuld avoid and buy from someone who speaks less chinglish...

I have found a local with full VCDS who can activate the radio as I asked above. if this is causing the battery drain (would the car know to turn the radio off properly even if it doesn't know its a navi) then I'd rather just do that as its quicker.

Coding the radio won't help or stop the battery drain. You need a correctly coded, compatible canbus gateway fitting.

That's about it really.  I reckon at some point we'll have to just accept that and get on with it.

I'm not getting it. They updated the software on my previous CAN to 178 (which I have checked and confirmed using vagcom). According to everything I've read and seen online there is no reason the battery would now continue to drain. The only thing that hasn't been done is telling the CAN that there is now a navigation system in, as they did not change the default settings that are for my VIN code.

I'm asking if I can get the local with vagcom to go into the CAN settings and set it as rosstech says:

  • Register the newly added 37 - Navigation Control Module, in case you had a Navigation System installed before the Retrofit this step may not be necessary. Address 56 - Radio should also be activated in case there was no Radio installed prior to the Retrofit.

and update the navigation system coding, would that make any difference to drain?

If my CAN is already at 178 I fail to see how changing it would make any difference at this point, as I'm already on the software that doesn't cause drain.

MORE EDITS: A german forum I just read did the same thing that I did with an older gateway and it worked, but he also had them add the Navi control module in VAGCOM which I haven't got.

Go ahead and get the gateway coded correctly for the nav unit.

Gateway coded and software update reapplied. They couldnt update it the way they said and they basically just applied a "fix" thinking taht would solve the battery drain, Now they have actually updated it by forcing the update using a VIN code from a K gateway. It now doesn't drain battery and works fine.

More problems now:

Fitted the microphone loom yesterday. Took the car to a guy with VCDS however we cannot get the car to communicate with the navigation system in it. It just fails to respond every time. Do I need to swap some cables around due to it being an older car or something?

Got an autoscan and what headunit did you remove?

I'm sure that all headunits in the MK2 Octavia have the same wiring. There should also be a sticker on the headunit showing the pinout too.

Autoscan doesnt show anything useful.

The previous head unit was the first generation Stream without mp3. It's possible it didn't connect to the canbus?

A skoda stream definitely connects into the canbus, is VCDS able to connect to the stream when fitted?

Yes when I choose Radio it shows up if its connected but it doesn't let me do anything to it.
