Cat gone

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

Not been on for a while due to bad health. Not been using the car either. Went out to use it last week and found a horrendous metallic rattle noise. Sounds like a marble in a Coke can. Stick my head underneath and the secondary cat has gone. The ceramic is rattling around inside.

Trip to local Skoda dealer and they quote me nearly £700

Wtf? Half of message is missing

Went onto bay of E and found an OEM cat for £96. Has anyone tried one of these?

Mot due in June. Will it go through MOT with an obviously faulty Cat?

Just but a self tapper in the bottom :p

How much of that was for the parts? I think an Indy could better that by a fair amount.

They quoted me £599 for part, rest was for fitting?

Can't you simply put anything that looks like that? Should work to pass MOT :)

I remember times when many people simply removed exhaust system, removed catalytic converters and welded it together again. The welding seam shouldn't be seen otherwise MOT people might get suspicious.

Hard to do when my Skoda main dealer mot's and services the car. They will probably notice that it's missing

I would just go to a tyre/exhaust place and have a generic cat installed, old one is cut out and the new one is clamped into place. Does not look to elegant under the car, but it will do its job.

That was my thinking.

Found this and wondering if it was worth it?

is it a diesel? if so no cat needed. petrol then yes

Looking at the profile (not visible on mobile apps) it is a 1.6 FSI petrol.

Here lies the issue.

A pre-FL 1.6 FSI has to be at least 8 years old.

There is no reason for you to be using a franchised Skoda main dealer, unless they are close and/or cheap. No warranty and no chance of goodwill at this age.

Quoting £700 for a new cat suggests to me that they certainly aren't cheap.

I wouldn't be taking it to them for the servicing / MOT either, again unless they are convenient or cheap.

There must be a well known / trusted independent near you, they will be a lot cheaper than a main dealer.

2004 so 12 years old nearly.

It's where I bought the car from and car has always had a full Skoda service history so I have always returned it there for MOT purely because their master tech lives a few streets away so will take my car and return it home for me when MOT is complete. MOT about the same cost as the local indies anyway so no odds there but after getting this quote for exhaust I certainly won't be taking it there for repair. As for getting car repaired at indy's I'm new to the area so need to check into this more. 2 garages local but neither have impressed me with work I've seen them do on neighbours cars.

Which Dealer mike? ALS?
As for an indy, hes a little trek from you but can recommend him 110%. Fen View Motors in March, Cambs. Used to be a skoda tech then decided to go it alone. Serviced and repaired my cars there for the last 5 years without any problems (and usually undercutting others by quite a way on cost!)

It is ALS yes.

Not been into March Yet but willing to travel to get a decent job at a decent price. I shall have a look for that. Cheers mate.

PM incoming...
