VCDS / Scans / VINS

Ok, seems to be as good a place as any for this question.......

Why is Briskoda not so keen on VIN's being left in as part of a posted scan?

VIN clone?

Leaving the VIN makes cloning easier, its recommended on virtually all car forums to remove the VIN number. One forum I am a member of will remove your entire post if it contains a VIN.

With a VIN you can also get spare keys from the dealer, so can be used to steal a car for example.

Yes the VIN is visible in the windscreen, but why go and search for a car that way when a quick google search can give the desired result.

Are you trying to suggest that a VIN posted online can be taken to a dealer who will happily give them a spare key which will open the car? Even if a user has narrowed their location to a single town or city that sounds like a lot of cars to try unlocking without extra information to find the cars actual location?

If even you've never posted your VIN, once they have the cars location they can take the VIN if necessary to gain access?

Are you also suggesting that when selling a car you should not share the VIN for background checks?

Not really, they only need the last few numbers to confirm with the HPI report and the car

There is some truth that dealers (at least in the US) have previously created keys for cars based from a VIN: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/vin.asp

I would hope that most dealerships would now insist on access to the car too as most modern ones will also need the immobilisers and remote pairing - to my knowledge this requires access to the car.

If someone wants your car for whatever reason, they will find a way to take it. Posting a VIN is unlikely to make a difference given that once a car is located they can get the VIN if needed. You could argue that giving out the make/model/spec of cars make it just as easy to find targets as they are easier to search for than a VIN...
