Intercooler

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone point me in the right direction is the intercooler behind the bumper and in front of the driver side wheel arch and to remove it does the radiator have to come off thanks

No, it's between the radiator and air con condenser.

Bumper off, slam panel hangs in space.  Allow 4-6 hours and it's much easier with a helper.

APR & Forge have DIYs written for the Golf GTI - it's similar but slightly different.

Thanks for that

I changed mine a few weeks ago (along with my air con condenser).

It's reasonably easy if you're handy with the spanners but quite long winded.

I found a guide somewhere on here that I can dig out if you can't find it.

This is what has to come off

JESUS that looks scary how long did it take to do the hole job.

Don't no where to look for that run down on how to do it thanks Graeme

Took me the best part of a Saturday. I didn't work flat out though and the rain slowed me down. 4-6 hours like brad says is about right.

I followed this guide

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/246754-replacing-aircon-condenser-how-to-put-lock-carrier-in-service-position/#entry2895228

If you're just doing intercooler then ib think there's enough space to swing the condenser out of the way with it all still connected as it's on flexi pipes.

And in that link it says about supporting the front panel and pulling it forward. I realised the only thing still connected to it was headlight washers and temperature sensor, so found it easier to take it off and get it right out the way.

I need to get the air con condenser & pump changed soon and I was wondering if it was worth upgrading the Intercooler for an S3 one?

I have a 2006 PD170 with a stage 1 remap.

I put mine up in the air on jackstands and fed the IC out through the bottom.  It saves your back as well.

Here are some guides.  If you can't work it out from these then you probably shouldn't DIY as there isn't a huge difference between a Golf & an Octy on the main components.

They give you a good idea what tools you will need.  They talk about some long (14mm?) bolts to temporarily hang the slam panel off.  I just used some long (12mm?) bolts and just poked them in the holes - there's no need to screw them in.  You could even use some round bar or pipe.
