Last Land Rover Defender leaves the factory :( Bye Bye

Featured Replies

I couldn't find a thread for this, so here it is. now that the last proper Land Rover has been built, does anyone need to share their memories or adventures in them? I also see the Boss at Land Rover bought the last 2 for him and his daughter! Seems a bit naughty, but there you go. I certainly remember smacking my knuckles into the dashboard in a series 2 LWB Landie we had at work. The turning circle was similar to a Glaciers' and not much quicker. I loved it :)

Anyone wanting to reminisce and see some whacky Landie variants, Autocar are doing a lot of features on it. Here is a link to Autocar's home page

I was up at JLR Solihull for a meeting Wednesday this week and there was lots of talk about these last one off the production line.

Been trying to find out some info on the replacement but everyone is tight lipped :(

Listening to Quentin Wilson, he was all over it today saying stuff like, they were still selling well.

So why can't they tweak the engine or put another lump in there to bring it in line with euro emissions regs etc.

I'm guessing they want to built the more lucrative type of vehicles rather than the workhorse type?

Number 3 looks epic :-)

They did put in some rather poor engines in the past few years.

He said they could have sold hundreds of thousands more because of the waiting lists.

The issue is the Pedestrian Crash / Impact area and EU regulations, solid bumpers, the air bags (lack of) etc, as it has been for over a decade.

They softened the Dash and all they could, but you still had restrictions on front seats and the likes.

They can do the Agricultural work, leisure and passenger duties, but sadly there time as new cars has ended.

So happy Days, still loads of used ones around in all flavours and engines.

Enough to see our lives out if we want one.

This was my last one,

a 1992 200Tdi that RPI Engineering put a 4.6 V8 Automatic in, ran on LPG only without petrol needed to start.

Fitted out as a camper.

(Sadly deceased.)

I know a guy that bought one as a posing vehicle, when he found he needed to drive around 10K miles a year in it, mostly on motorways, he sold it as he couldn't live with it :D He was a right muppet I think ;) I love them, but couldn't really ever justify one. Maybe one day :)

As the last Land Rover Defender leaves the production line this morning, the car’s biggest fans blasted newcomers who have snapped up the last remaining examples of the venerable 4×4.

‘I wanted to get one of the last Defenders but they’d all been bought by bloody country folk,’ complained Arabella Occasional-Tayble of Hampstead. ‘And what are they doing to do with them? Probably just drive them across fields. I bet they won’t even attempt to use them for the school run. It’s such a shame.

’‘I saw a chap in a brand new Defender only the other day, claiming to work for a utility company or forestry management or something,’ grumbled Hugo Byfold-Dawes of Notting Hill. ‘Best of luck to you, I thought. You mark my words, he’ll find it rather hard work compared to the Hilux or whatever he had before.’

‘These country people heard about the death of the Defender and all of a sudden they want to get one so they can pretend they live in the city,’ fumed Bunty Skeeing-Holliday of Fulham. ‘These aren’t real Defender people and they aren’t buying them for real reasons such as thinking they look nice and grudgingly having to drive them whenever Charlie’s taken the Range Rover.’

Land Rover is currently working on a brand new Defender which it says will boast modern technology and efficiency without losing any of its legendary ability to find a parking space outside Waitrose.

Back in 1982 I had a series 2a with a 4303 Perkins diesel engine in it, it was number than a numb thing after overdosing on numb pills, but it would pull a terraced house down via the other end of the terrace.

I have had a big crush on a SWB V8 with a snorkel and a winch, for years. No idea what I'd do with it. I think I want to be Lara Croft :D

One of the first vehicles I ever drove, and probably one of the reasons I don't find anything particularly hard to drive.

My brother had a s2 for a bit, I took it for a drive, my verdict was "not the fastest, or most comfortable tractor I've ever driven"

Sufficed to say, I really don't like them, never have.

But it's the end of an era. Although I was more upset when they stopped making transits over here.

Number 3 looks epic :-)

My choice too

I just sold my trusty Defender 90 300tdi for crazy money (good) about a month ago.

It is the only vehicle my wife actually loved and said it had a soul, no other vehicle has ever got that reaction.

They are such a good everyday workhorse and in the right hands pretty much a go anywhere vehicle.

My first experience of a land rover was back in 82 in the military with a really early short wheelbase petrol thing with a push start :)

Big shame but wouldn't want a decent hit from the side in one, not much metal there.

I want one, I have no use for one and don't need one, but I really want one!

We have 3 ancient Defenders in our St John Ambulance fieet in Kent. Two V8 110s and a 130 TDi. 3 of the most characterful vehicles I have driven. Proof you don't have to drive fast to have fun and being only 5ft 6 has a dintinct advantage in a cramped interior!

I remember being about 14 and learning to drive in a Series 2a, all of road, spent at least 10hrs one day just driving round a large farm cross fields and a stream.

So always had a soft spot for the Green Oval, and know doubt have another one of some sort again.

The good news is I keep hearing that almost 2/3rds of the Landies ever built are still going, so there will always be some nice ones to buy :)

Seen elsewhere, the factory are about to start a restoration line, where they will take old LR's, rebuild them and then sell them.

It's called a Bolero

Only it is a Mahindra Bolero!

Sadly it was the emissions and safety standards that ultimately led to it's demise.

It may well be produced outside of Europe but it's unlikely the Defender in it's current guise will grace UK shores again.

Has a bit of Ssangyong look about it...

That looks like it is based on the Merc G-Wagon.

There has been something painted in a gold scatter pattern driving around here in the evenings lately; short wheel base, 2 door, no rear overhang, shortish bonnet, flay front scree, on what looked like 16" rims with All Terrain tyres. In the past LR used several on and off road routes around here for testing pre-production models.
