Skoda Fabia 2002 1.4 petrol - shuddering when cold

Featured Replies

I love my Skoda, and use it to thrash around during my job visiting vulnerable people in the community. Its just hit the 100k mark, however a couple of weeks ago when it was freezing cold the engine light came on and it was shuddering when the ignition started.

The engine light stayed on for 2 days with me driving it 60 miles each day, and then when it warmed up after a few days the engline light went off.

Since then, the light has come on twice. Both times after i didnt drive it for a few days over the weekend. Today and last week it was the same pattern of starting the ignition and the engine juttering about and not having much power when you start going through the gears. When it warms up after a while then it drives pretty much as normal and the light goes off.

Any advice on what this could be? It seems to be potentially more serious than just a cold engine. Thanks

Could be spmething like temperature sensor or EVAP control solenoid, hard to say without you getting the codes read on the vehicle.

Change the ECT sensor for a start.

As above, get the car scanned with a fault code reader. I'd also say it might be the ect (g62) sensor, but don't replace parts without a proper scan.

ECT sensor problems often do not throw a code unless implausible, the ECU doesn't know that it's 0C after the cars been sat overnight if the ECT sensor says it's 40C since it could be true but it makes a huge difference to starting and running.

With a cold engine and a scanner you can read/log the temps. This is how I've diagnosed my brand new faulty ect sensor:)

If you replace the ECT get a genuine one. Pattern ones can be rubbish.

You'd be surprised...I've bought 2 OEM thermostat housings with ECT sensors and thermostats as well(as kit, not separate), both ect sensors were doa or have failed after lets say a week or less. The aftermarket one which I purchased more than 2 years ago is still in mint condition.

Sounds like the ECT sensor is a good starting point.  I'll give it a go changing it, and let you know how I go.

Hate to be a killjoy, but changing parts until it works can get expensive very quickly, even a basic £12 home code reader will at least give you some clue as to the cause. The coolant temp sensor is the most likely, but it's by no means the only possibility.

A two pin coolant sensor costs about/at least £35 coming from a main dealer with seal and retaining clip, after buying that I found genuine kits on ebay for £25 delivered - if any of that is relevant.  My findings are different to your's, scanned car during a service and found some logged intermittent duff values, so bought the bits!
