coilovers

Featured Replies

Are these any good ?

I think you know the answer already.

The best money can buy.

How much!?!? If I was to write a list of things you should spend £80 on I don't think coilovers would be on it. You can get a pair of mountain bike forks serviced for that.

But the advert clearly says "German Quality" so...

They say that about hot dog sausage, but you can't beat a Cumberland ring

You weren't sarcastic, were you? If those do really are TA Technix ... should be pretty neat .. right ? I've heard nothing but good things about them ..

Get them and do a review then :)

Would love to know if there's another budget coilover to go for since the cheapest, Joms, are around £200 basically so for £80 they are sooo cheap. Possibly an error listing?

Reckon you're right, 179 would make more sense for absolute budget. If you want budget coilies there is a fair bit of choice but you'd have to be prepared to pay at least 200 as said.

TA Technix, neat?

Might as well just remove your springs and dampers.

Equivalent of bolting a block of wood in your rear beam iirc

Well, I just googled it, so don't judge me :) I've seen them on a lot of E36 BMWs, and according to it's low price, if they would last for 2 years, it would be good. But in fact, they last somewhere between 8 and 14 months, which isn't that good. This kit makes you think you're going fast but in fact everybody overtakes you, like when you're running by yourself and still getting the 2nd place.

It's common sense really, even at £200 for a set of four springs and four damper. £50 per corner, and they still make a profit on them. What quality of materials and research went into making them?

It's amusing to say the least to imagine having to change your front struts annually, having just fitted a Bilstein B12 kit and replaced every wearing part in the front suspension I can tell you it wasn't a fun job to do on axle stands.

I needed the angle grinder for four of the six lower ball joint retaining bolts as well as having to split a nut on a track rod end, I just cracked the console bushes then levered them out.

It's like a magic carpet now so you really do get what you pay for. If you're going to do the job, do it right.

I have a 200 quid set on mine(not for long) a year old and falling to bits already, cheap junk, you get what you pay for.

Ride quality is pathetic.

I have AP coilovers and im really happy with them. Would reccomend

Agree with the above. I have some as there very good for the price, however I am saving up for a more expensive set up.

You are pretty much right here, but a £1-2000 suspension setup would be comfortable as the default one and also stiff on the track? Can you go with 3-4 passengers in the car, a fully loaded boot with luggage, run it 10-150.000 miles, maybe get a few potholes and speed bumps because hey..we don't have that perfect roads and after all this daily bases abuse..take even more abuse on the track and still run for a few years?

Are those really as good as the all season tires?

Bilstein B12 kit was £522, Meyle HD droplinks £28, Febi top mounts and bearings £41, Febi ball joints £21, PSB bushes £27 and S/H OE gaiters £6 for a total of £645 plus a days labour to fit it all.

The difference is night and day, the ride is firmer yet more comfortable, hitting a bump mid corner used to involve a heartstopping twist and lurch requiring hasty steering correction but now it just shrugs and holds the line with no input needed at all.

Regarding the stance, think WRC tarmac rally rather than BTCC billiard table, form follows function my furry friends, for effective damping you have to actually have suspension travel for the damping to act upon. It's perfect and I'm delighted.

Edit: Interestingly the 2.0 MPI has the exact same front setup as the VRS, just slightly different spring rates to suit the lighter engine, same 288 brakes and hubs, same driveshafts and gearbox as the PD100 and the same FARB which is noticeably chunkier than my old 1.4.
